Most companies can't be hurt by being shorted. However, when the financials are shorted the analysts begin to think there is something actually wrong with them and there's a reason for the drop in share price. So the analysts downgrade the financials, which in turn causes their bonds and all their other means of raising capital to be downgraded. Which in turn makes it extremely difficult for these banks to raise the additional capital.
