  • Actually, Americans Are Not Saving Yet [View article]
When serious inflation comes to the US (and I really think it will) savers will be punished. I've acted in this bad movie before in the seventies. If you are debt free and have spare cash spend spend spend. Buy some jewelry, nice furniture, remodel your kitchen, get a nose job, whatever. Everything is going to cost lots lots more.

  • Are the Unemployment Numbers Real? [View article]
The existence of Unemployment Insurance, which the worker contributes to, makes it easier for employers to lay workers off. They know there is a net. Some of the workers look for new work immediately but others consider the UI benefits as a paid vacation. Some use the UI benefits as a base and get some "paid under the table work". The hardest hit individuals during an economic downturn are the new college graduates without a work record to collect on and college loans to pay off. These are some of the realities that cloud the "official numbers"

  • U.S. Refiners Squeezed by Collapse in Crude Oil Discounts [View article]
I'm long on VLO. When people look at Valero they only see a crude refiner. They are also the largest US retailer now. Their retail outlets are combined with convenience stores selling basics. There is a wind farm in the works which will be subsidized. Rather than fighting government regulations they go along with them. Management feels ethanol blending is here to stay so they bought ethanol processors at fire sale prices.
How many people do you know that drive battery operated cars?

  • Causes of and Cures for the Economic Crisis [View article]
Peter - hopefully SOME of the congresspersons realize how valuable and valid your testimony was. I'm going to try and e-mail it to my congressman who is on the Ways and Means Committee. He is against offshore drilling, really against use of fossil fuels. He has been brainwashed into thinking research in alternative energy is the magic wand to eliminating our dependence on foreign oil and lessening our trade deficit. I'm glad you pointed out to the committee that the environmental groups have to be told to be happy with what has already been done in this country. If we give them any more here the "polluters" will continue the trek to other areas. The USA and Canada are probably the cleanest developed countries on the face of the earth. If anyone knows of any better, let me know in a comment on this post. Your testimony was a real page turner - I look forward to reading your other work.

I think there are a number of Democrat House Reps that are worried about the next congressional election. This isn't the change that people expected when they voted for Obama. By that time his speechifying will be very old and tiresome. Wouldn't it be nice to be rid of Pelosi?

  • Dry Bulk Shipping: Recent BDI Rise Is Heartening [View article]
I've enjoyed being a Diana Shipping Stockholder for a long time. The fleet is young, the customers are all top drawer: Cargill, BHP Billiton. The management is intelligent and show evidence of staying in touch with what is going on in other sectors. Communication with the the analysts and stockholders is excellent.

Thank you for the well written article - it strengthens my faith that good times will return

  • Is it Time to Buy Dry Bulk Shippers? [View article]
Good article but I would add Diana Shipping DSX as one of the best shipping companies. The intelligent and well seasoned management communicates well with analysts and stockholders in quarterly conference calls. The fleet is young and the crews are well trained enabling the company to secure good contracts with quality shippers. The dividends were very generous up until now when the company made the decision to stop issuing a dividend in order to preserve capital for any great opportunity that would come their way because of the downturn.

  • Infrastructure Investment Will Be a Slow Economic Stimulus Path [View article]
Fastest way of getting infrastructure stimulus dollars circulating is with the 3 R's : Replace, repair, rehabilitate. If lucky, old plans, blueprints, etc. can be found somewhere.
Gov. of Conn. this morning expressed hopes of getting money for projects that were "shovel ready". Everything done except getting the money,
Huge projects needing permits, original design etc. would be better left alone for now.

  • U. of Wisconsin Dean's Perspective on the Economy [View article]
Kevin Price- your taking the time to write this article and share what you heard is appreciated by moi. I can't understand what turned off the three commentors before me. Actually consumption is already taxed by way of sales taxes and Cap and Trade may tax pollution. I agree that lending and borrowing has to get going. The "infused" banks have to let go of the cash.
