    • Apple’s “Day and Date” Announcement Ushers in a New Era for Movie Studios [view article]
      Quoting:
      >For studios, “Day and Date” releases also stretch marketing budgets across and remove one of piracy’s stronger incentives, time (if a movie isn’t legally available for months, an “I want it now” type of consumer has incentive to get it illegally. If the windows shrink and there is a legal option, that incentive is less relevant).

As one who has indulged in the occasional pirate movie download, I think this won't shrink piracy much. Yes, having to wait for DvD is an incentive, but the incentive behind that is the mass of movie hype when a film hits theatres. That's when movies are most desired. It's why people will accept a dodgy camera-in-a-movie-thea... pirate version (especially if they are non-US and have to wait longer for the theatre release).

A few weeks later, by the time DvDs or VOD, etc, are coming out, nobody wants the movie so much. As mentioned earlier in the article, all the marketing and hype has died down by this time. Interest in pirate versions has waned. The incentive is directly related to the strength of marketing.

To truly have an effect on piracy, DvD releases and theatre releases should be simultaneous.
