MSFT’s Next Online Business Chief Will Need a Compass, and a Clue, in New Media [view article]
As an obvious step, Microsoft must release an offline/online docs & spreadsheets in silverlight technology (I am not talking about * live), and if they can release it as open source at codeplex they will kill google docs & spreadsheets in a blink and show some virtual strength. I think that Flash/Flex Adobe market share will be down because of Silverlight in the coming two years. It's too late for Adobe to embrace such innitiative. Flash/Flex is really nice but after a kingdom of more than a decade without a competitor, they need to fight to a 10X force from Microsoft. On the mobile side Microsoft still has a lot of space to grow. Currently it has a low market share of ~12% but windows mobile it's not that bad.Comparing it with other alternatives like Blackberry, Symbian based and Mac OS X based (iPhone) I can say that from a developer & business perspective Microsoft is in a better position. iPhone SDK is promising but Apple (Steve Jobs?) try to kick developers instead of attracting them, they ask for paying $ 99 & $ 299 for entering the program... Symbian development is slow and Blackberry is so propietary. Google came up with Android but it's not a really open platform and you must develop in Java.
IMHO Apple can be a real competitor if they finally understand that developers are partners. Also somebody can build a Linux based platform with a really nice GUI, and good and fast developers tools. May 04 03:38 PM
Microsoft/Yahoo Drama and Investing in Google [view article]
The sad thing about Microsoft is that they can't even build (from a technical perspective) a copycat version of Google adwords/analytics. Looking at adcenter and adcenter analytics you quickly realize that MS has not idea about how to build a web application! If I were Microsoft, I would build a keyword exchange market instead of another adwords/overture/adcen... system, so you can empower many ad networks in one place. It can work like a stock exchange market.

Sun Microsystems: Burnout or Takeover Target? [view article]
Sun is a bad doer in the software arena.Java is currently successful not because Sun, it's because the Apache foundation, BEA software, IBM and a lot of contribution from the open source community and companies. There is not vendor lock-in here, there are many Java implementations and now Sun will open source their own. So Java is currently more a specification than a vendor owned product, IMHO Sun is currently irrelevant to the Java business. It's important to remember that Sun promoted Java in the client side, that there were thin-clients to run Java applications, but finally Java won the space in the server side.
Let's look at other hot software areas where Sun has failed:
- JavaFX: While Microsoft came finally with Silverlight to fight Adobe/Macromedia Flash/Flex business, Sun lost a precious opportunity with JavaFX, anybody plan to use JavaFX right now? I don't think so. If somebody wants some objetive data, While JavaFX has not delivered anything yet to really compete with Adobe or Microsoft, the open source innitiative Mono has implemented an early verion of Moonlight/Siliverlight as open source in 21 days: tirania.org/blog/archi...
- OpenSolaris: How many companies are using OpenSolaris? Why you'll choose OpenSolaris instead of Linux/FreeBSD/others?
- OpenOffice: While the product is very good, it's not clear how this free product benefits Sun. IBM has been promoting free platforms like eclipse but they have seen it as part of an ecosystem with commecial solutions like WebSphere, Notes and others.
So, I don't think you can trust Sun in the software business arena.
