  • Railroad Indicator: On Track for Recovery [View article]
    Jakester,

    BNSF was down 0.95% on 9/23. Hardly what I would call a slam. BNSF is down another 1.05% today (as of 1:30 pm). I would call a 2% drop in two days a buying opportunity.

    I guess I'm just not ready to call this the beginning of a 10% to 20% pullback, as some bears are opining. But I have been wrong before. It's still too early to panic.

    BTW = Buy the Weigh.

    You can question the viability of a lot of stocks, but understand that if you mention anything negative about Apple, Starbucks or Ferrari, the tifosi will be out to get you.

    Don't stop covering the game show. I like the game show. It's fun to watch the game show. Play KSU if you like volatility and upside (and downside, be careful) potential. Play UNP or BNI if you are more conservative and like the dividends. There is no wrong answer here.

  • Stimulus Puts Railroads on Fast Track to the Future [View article]
    I do not think we are going to see hydrogen powered trains in the near future, but high-speed rail in areas that are already electrified (the northeast corridor) are possible in one to two years. High speed rails in Europe have absolutely decimated short-hop airline flights. Studies have shown that travelers prefer planes to trains when train travel exceeds about four hours. Thus, high speed trains in Europe (at 150 mph) will replace air flight out to about a 600 mile radius, and with a carbon footprint of 10% that of an airliner. High speed rail in the United States will run at a more modest 110 mph so we can expect high utilization on trips of 450 miles or less.

    A high speed rail line from New York to Los Angeles sounds intriguing, but would probably have low ridership because most people would want to fly when crossing a continent.

    Mark,

    All of your stocks are sensitive to the economy. Add a fifth stock in the healthcare area (GILD?, JNJ?, ABT?, SGP?) and you will be able to weather the rough spots a little better. Just a suggestion.

  • By the Numbers - Fast Money Recap (10/17/08) [View article]
    ashizashiz,

    You really do have to work on your anger management. While I admire your passion, not paying taxes and not using credit are not really viable options.

    Credit has allowed me to buy a house in which to raise my family. Without a mortgage, we would still be living in an apartment and I would not have accumulated $250K in equity in 20 years.

    Nobody likes to pay taxes, but somebody has to pay for all those aircraft carriers which come in mighty handy when they are needed. You want a plan where everybody has enough to eat, is warm and has water to drink. Stop paying taxes to your local community and the water to drink will go away pretty quickly. Besides, I want a standard of living for myself and my family that is a little better than basic food, water and heat. I am an American and I enjoy baseball and football games, driving my cars, fishing, having a beer by the barbecue in the back yard, going on vacation for two weeks in the summer, and sending my kids to college so that they will have better opportunities than me.

    You don't even know Hank Paulson. While you may disgree with his view on the economy, he is a smart man and if you lived next door to him you might find him to be an alright guy. More people in this country agree with his views than yours. But, its a free country and you are free to express yourself. More people would listen to you if weren't so negative.

    Lighten up. Rein in your finances enough so that you can once more sleep at night.
