  • The Thesis For Precious Metals And Miners, II: Monetary Issues And Market Outlook [View article]
Emmet...another excellent article, quite up to your other ambitious attempts to explain the rather complex intermarket and inter-event implications of the present macroeconomic environment. Thank you.
I request some help: "Central Banks want to buy PMs cheap: On 6-18-12, the Federal Reserve and FDIC circulated a letter to banks that proposes to harmonize US regulatory capital rules with Basel III that sets the reserves a Bank must hold to support its solvency. It's "a global standard on bank capital adequacy, stress testing, and market liquidity risk." At the top of the proposed changes regarding "zero-percent risk weighted items" gold bullion is listed right after cash."
In the Fed/FDIC citation I can find no such reference to gold bullion. Please reply with the page citation should you care to, as the precise terminology of Basel III is critical to understanding the precise interpretation. Thanks again for the well-done piece.

  • Bubbleomix Says Gold Bottomed On 4th April 2013 And Now It's Headed To $1,800 [View article]
Simple comment: thank you for concise, well-written piece which explores, in interesting documented detail, a thesis I have never before seen so well articulated. More material for the ol' "think-o-later" in continually developing a "triangulation" of analyses for not only gold, but methinks applicable to other asset classes as well.

LYogi...tragic and hilarious comment. I refer you to "When Money Dies" (Adam Ferguson) and the specific actions, 1920-1923, taken by Dr. Rudolf Havenstein, President of the Reichsbank, and more specifically to a speech made by him in May 1922. This speech, which rather precisely comports with your comment, greatly vexed an English observer, Lord D'Abernon, into writing "he had compressed into the shortest space the maximum number of fallacies and errors".

Shorting GLD is a good idea; GLD is a garbage investment. "Exposure to the price of gold" indeed; just give yourself enough time for the bifurcation of paper and phys, and GLD goes downnnnn...

Actual pricing on SGE, in size, is $20+/troy oz premium over NYMEX spot price. Given the last few days, I believe such premium to be higher. Paper ain't phys.

    animus (nice handle...pls seek help)
    The following is equally true:
Gold is the only investment you can buy at any price and make money. It pays no dividend and goes up (in terms of depreciating fiat currencies) under almost all circumstances.

I would of course defer to PP, but it seems obvious that such wording is expressly designed to remove GOOG appeal alternatives.

Emmet....Published! Another excellent article, sir. I need to reread and contemplate a bit, but per your usual high standard, thought-provoking and not subject to appropriate "instant" commentary. Thank you.

  • Gold Mining Sector - A Window Of Value Ready To Close [View article]
I think the price action today was indicative of the imminent bifurcation of phys and paper pricing, which I do not think will take long. My uber-contrarian POV says that this is very good for PM mining equities: they are very undervalued by almost any measure, paper will be worth zero, miners are the only source of phys, CBs are accumulating-the largest and most price insensitive buyers in the phys market-, and deflation in input costs for mining due to macroeconomic problems will yield rising FCF.

And, of course, we all know that forward earnings estimates are bulletproof, as are the P/E estimates in this extremely robust and stable macroeconomic environment. Right.

Marpha...are you a TMT tech guy or an IP attorney? You might have a different opinion re your second and third 'graph. Nonetheless, I believe your conclusion re today's price action is correct; I further believe the price action movement re those points is incomplete as of today COB.
    Just my $.01.
