It's called 'conformity' and it leads people to join, uncritically, any parade that comes along. Questioning the basic beliefs of the group is heresy while following blindly leads to happiness, profit and other forms of Utopia --- until the inevitable fall.
Thinking for oneself is a difficult task and the foundation of democracy. But who has the courage for it?
