In theory all energy could be equally valued by its potential net btu output. Coal may be cheaper because there are secondary and toxic effects related to its use that are not factored into its immediate cost. If we compared "clean coal" to solar or wind would it still be less expensive? As long as we are willing to pay for coals effects by way of higher health costs and a diminished environment it will seem to be a better value. But is it?
