Disney: Marvel Deal a Hero or a Villain? [View article]
I love Dis, sold position only to take profits and have larger % cash.
But buying Pixar and now Marvel, leaves me to think Dis is just buying any company that competes well. Buy the comp and no need to try harder. Good for dis bad for consumers.
The parks can not be doing that well, the free meals gig keeps going, and the ships continue the offer discounts. Be interesting to see how much people are spending in the parks .....
Online TV, Movie Streaming Accelerates in U.S. [View article]
"some type of internet video"
It is tricky to even know what this means.
Does it count little linked clips emailed around? What percentage is porn? Is there a real impact on broadcast TV?
Are the younger viewer using PCs to replace TVs or are they just using PCs because of a lack of access/control of primary source....
These quetions matter, because if all we are talking about is more people watch porn videos due to improve bandwidth, then it means little, but if the venue of first choice is really shifting to the net then the existing models are under threat....
Top 10 Online Video Sites: YouTube Dominates, Hulu on the Rise [View article]
Hulu has more than Comscore is telling us.
First and most importantly , hulu is already producing a revenue stream. The program quality is in place and it is easy for sponsors to tie into. Commercials are marked and timed to let you know they are not going to mess with you, no unexpected interruptions, and the sponsors are pretty one per viewing. It is a winning combo that may very well end up being hybrid all parties have been looking for. Hulu has an upside for broadcast too, if you miss one or two you might catch up there rather than abandon the program altogether.
Downside , perhaps it hurts broadcast television figures somewhat through cannibalization . Also there is a cost for each download unlike broadcast where the cost of sending the signal has little to do with the numbers watching.
With improved targeting, and perhaps user consent, HULU could be placing ads to just the right person at just the right time of the day, or life. HULU could even consider premium quality downloads/bandwidth for users who "opt" into a deep profiling feature. I think this is where online video is going. Youtube is great for fun things, clips , reviews, online learning, and cheap shots, but as of yet it is just a big sink hole sucking up money faster than a coke fiend at a strip club. Think of Hulu as the one you just might bring home to mom, sure the other guy/girl is lots of fun but you are certainly not going to raise kids together.
One time Sony was to undisputed king of tech toys, from the Walkman to the playstation they could do no wrong.
They did not have some huge tech lead, just good marketing and struck the right note with the punters.
Apple has no moat, other than branding, and branding is a weak moat at best. Sure the ipod is fun and the iphone cool , and apple is miking the public like a pumped up cow. But I fail to see enough of a moat to buy into this stock. It is too easy for them to be beaten in each market seg.
