  • Platinum: A Stronger Safe Haven than Gold? [View article]
Take it from me, the South African power supply is still very marginal, and with the chrome smelters coming back on stream, outages in the early part of 2010 are a strong likelihood. Ingot demand from Japan reasonable too. The SA mines need a high rhodium price too, so you're probably best off investing in a shallow non-African producer.

Please bear in mind that when markets TREND you get autocorrelation creeping into the data, which results in artificially low volatility readings.

  • South Africa: Post-Apartheid Dream in Total Disarray [View article]
Your comments are very general, and in many places not underpinned by fact. As for growth, most of Africa, except maybe the oil producers or failed states are likely to outgrow South Africa, which in turn will outgrow most of the OECD. I suggest you visit eurasia.com to be more informed on SA.

  • Think Inflation in the U.S. Is Bad? Listen Up [View article]
The contribution from Food and Fuel to emerging market inflation indices is far higher than the US. Also they do not have banking crises and credit crunches to deal with. Stop whining, you folks in the US still have a good life you know....
