Garmin makes great products and has tried very hard to provide the best databases to go with it. However, their map updates are the weak point in a market where consumers expect current accurate information. How many times will a consumer follow Garmin instructions to a closed business, different business or empty lot before they no longer rely on them. The answer is once or maybe twice but not three times. As a long time Garmin user, I no longer rely on it to find where I want to go, but still use it for navigation. I don't know of any way to tell Garmin when I find an error in their database.
Garmin would be better off working with Apple and Google to:
1. Bring Garmin to the iPhone. 2. Bring Google to the Garmin products. 3. Form a new paradigm in GPS positioning products that provides accurate and current information via live search and updates with ratings from other users.
Consumers have gotten over the amazing idea of navigating by GPS and now expect more from mobil devices. Can Garmin deliver?

Rimm = One Great Product!
But definitely a one trick pony in a very competitive market. Can they keep there device competitive with a legacy operating system? When is the last time that a new software update to the phone made headlines? How about leaving the ARM processor behind and designing a new chip? No, I don't see Rimm as the mobile platform of the future.

I don't own one, but the author says that you can't install apps on the memory card and run them. We need a knowledgeable storm owner to verify this.

Good point. However, hardware limitations are somewhat simple to overcome with new models. What RIMM really is going to have trouble competing against is the current culture of iPhone app developers. Apple has done a fantastic job creating the opportunity for development, advertising and distribution of iPhone applications. With only a very few complaints it appears that the qpp store is by far the greatest feature of the iPhone platform. Let's put it this way, could a room full of microsoft or rimm software engineers ever conceive of an application that would find the nearest public restroom and rate it for you? (Sit or Squat) If they did, would they ever think to bring it up at a business meeting and dare suggest it could make money? This is a whole new paradigm (to use a board-room cliche') in software development that will be very very hard to beat.

Fortunately most consumers see the big picture that you have failed to mention.
The iPhone is a platform with the power of thousands of developers writing applications and games easily installed at reasonable prices. An iPhone owner can reasonably expect that there is an application available for just about any need, and there are more and more apps popping up every day.

Why is it that nobody ever talks about the "Jaguar Premium Pricings" or the "Porsch Tax". Please realize that Apple computers are the Jaguars and Porsches of the computer world. If you can afford one buy it, if not buy something cheaper. Either way, you are getting pretty much what you pay for.
Jaguar and Porsch do not use Yugo parts or cheap seat covers and Apple does not use low end components or cr*ppy software. The days of having to be a geek to run a home computer are gone. Nobody wants to be nagged about it either, thus the great failure of Vista. Apple computers are easier to use, more productive, and more user friendly and fun than any others on the planet.
The real story about APPL is about how more and more people worldwide are finding the money to buy a premium computer at a premium price. So far, regardless of economic conditions!

ulric,
You make a lot of assumptions about the 3G iPhone. Of course, the verdict is still out and only time will tell if you got it right. My guess is that Apple will make the corporate e-mail user experience work. This is not based on assumptions, but rather on past performance. Apple is the standout tech company because it has proven time and time again that it is responsive to the users wants and needs and can improve it's products to meet and exceed those standards. It is no wonder that Rimm has done well and I think that it will continue to do well, however, I see Rimm as serving a much narrower market. To you and other business types maybe a physical keyboard is important, but the overwhelming success of the iPhone so far proves that for most people it is not. Apple attracts anyone that uses a phone, media player, or PDA, and is effectively putting a mini mac in the palm (pun intended) of your hand.

Right after aapl announces street-beating spectacular earnings is always a good time to buy.
Anyone that would care to research AAPL stock prices would easily recognize the contrarian nature of this stock before and after earnings announcements. The stock will climb steadily up until a few days before, then plummet after a spectacular announcement that they beat the street.
