  • Apple Drops, Becomes More Attractive As It Aims For Total Victory Over Android And Windows  [View article]
    Doc,

IBM is doing the death spiral. They will cling to any life raft thrown their way. The company keeps getting smaller every year. They are no longer relevant. To be honest, I am surprised Apple would allow their name in the same sentence with IBM. Also, I can't argue with Apple's technical support, but really, who cares? I have never, and will never, call a computer manufacturer for help. Who does that? Computers aren't rocket science. If it is broken I will bring it back to Apple, Best Buy, etc. If it is a glitch I will figure it out. My point is this...I guarantee that I can do anything on a PC that I can on my Mac. It doesn't do anything the other won't. The Mac cost almost $2K and the Dell cost me $600-$700.

In no way am I saying that Apple isn't a wonderful company that is extremely undervalued. I completely agree with you 100% on that front. I just shake my head when the diehards talk their beloved Apple products. It is Jim Jones handing out kool-aid all over again. My Samsung phone is every bit the equal of an iPhone 6 (work phone) and my laptop every bit the equal of the Mac. It makes people upset, but doesn't make it "less true".

You are correct...they are the most profitable. They still make up less than 10% of computer (PC) sales. Profitability from a stock perspective is great, but lets be real...fewer than 1 in 10 buy a Mac. They cost twice as much and do the exact same job as a "regular" PC. I type this on a Dell lap top as the Mac sits unused on the other side of my office. I have nothing against the Mac...just raised on the PC and prefer it in almost every way.

    User 12....

I actually agree that the "law of large numbers" is in play here. Apple, by its sheer size, makes substantial growth difficult. But, as the author pointed out, they are dominant and priced below a market PE which is absurd. I don't think Apple triples from here, but see no reason why it can't outperform in the next few years.

That was a little too much Apple cheerleading for my taste. I own a Mac, an iPhone, 2 iPads and several Andriod devices (and a Kindle). I see zero difference between the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy. The Mac...I hate. I know "the cult" will come out in droves to tell me how wrong I am, and how they pray to Steve Jobs nightly. But, I don't care. Apple had a BIG lead and now the gap isn't as discernible in my view. Apple makes great products...so does Samsung. Apple is by far the better run company which is why I am a shareholder. Is Apple without peer...um...no.

  • Baidu: Buy On The Drop?  [View article]
Although you make some good points....why not invest in yourself when you are undervalued? I would be concerned if BIDU didn't initiate a buy back. It would show a lack of confidence in the stock. Buy backs have been excellent drivers of EPS increases over the years. Yes...it is "manufactured" by reducing the float, but really, who cares? I, actually, wish the buy back was more substantial. To put things in perspective...CAT just initiated a buy back that was TEN times larger and their market cap is $13 billion less. One billion is peanuts.

Well...yes...I think it is fair to say I am a tad unhappy, but that is investing. I guess I hate violating Buffet's #1 rule (don't lose money). I do, however, appreciate people like yourself that take the time to help the masses...so thank you.

    Jeremy,

I get the fact that you like a company that is trying to enter into new revenue streams, but I have to wonder if they are trying to be too many things to too many people and won't do any, outside of search, very well. I believe Peter Lynch called this "deworseification" when a company gets away from their core business. You didn't really address their chances of success against the likes of BABA who have a big lead many of these areas. Spending money doesn't insure success by any means, so this is a wait and see for me. I am long, unfortunately, but did average down at $162.50. I fear this was an unwise use of capital (averaging down) but will see how things shake out.

Yeah...and getting scorched to the tune of -15% today. Author clearly was spot on and I am long Baidu...unfortunately. I am not a cheerleader for any stock though, so I give credit where it is due. Good call... Wish I had listened.

A dividend wouldn't temper investor emotion on a "down 18% day". It wouldn't even be a consideration. If it was...I would question the sanity of the investor(s).

They don't have to solve for discipline...they just have to make you MORE prone to exercise. Big difference.

Author is wrong about devices not impacting exercise discipline. Studies indicate that devices like the Fitbit actually do increase the amount of exercise accomplished because it, being worn on the wrist, is seen as a constant reminder to the user. I don't need a crutch like that, but some might. Also, I have no dog in the race. Neither long nor short.

    Jeremy...

Where are you getting these numbers? I have it falling 25% from its high of $251. Where are you getting 45% from? I agree with you that it is a good buy (I own it), but your PE ratio and other numbers appear wrong (which hurts the credibility of the article).

    2Toe,

Explosive growth? Is that defined by YOY numbers that aren't down -40%? I would settle for stabilization at this point.
