  • The Curious Case Of Canada [View article]
What started out as a discussion became simply a name calling tirade. Without sounding like I want to continue the commentary.......if you wish to comment on political and social realities PLEASE at least come to the debate with facts not what you MAY think.
A resource based country has an upside and a downside.....simple facts. Not my opinion just a reality. If people wish to think otherwise well be happy.

So now that the " Who Is Better " discussion is concluded , let us please discuss the article. As a Canadian Investor , I invest in both the US Markets and the Canadian Markets. By in large the investments are in companies that have either an International footprint or are significant in the Domestic Market/s.
I have often thought that both countries have more in common than most actually accept.
If I may , could we please keep to the topic.

  • It's Getting Worse: Coke's Dollar Crisis Illustrated [View article]
Excellent article. As a Canadian holding both US and CDN Holdings in my portfolio you are always aware of exchange rates. My concerns on the strength of the USD in the short term is the beginning of the idea of " Currency Wars ". I refer to the recent and obvious situation with the Yuan.
The manipulation of currencies does create possible short to mid term issues for American Multi Nationals.

  • Emerson Electric- Consider It Solved? [View article]
Not to downplay Customer Service but the reality is that in the Airline Industry the product is a commodity. Consumers will go to exceptional lengths to save 25.00.
Amazing but true and that is a reality. If you are discussing Alliance Partners this has become almost an absolute for the airlines. If you are out on your own this is problematic and be assured consumers will go through hoops to collect Frequent Flyer Points. If they only knew what the real cost for the airline was they would be shocked.

  • Avianca Holdings Is Cheap, Will It Get Cheaper? [View article]
I have some experience in the Industry and I have always said for Airlines , Hotels , Cruise Lines it is always about timing for share purchases. I have a sense that moving forward Currency will become significant for the above industries. As the USD continues to strengthen this could become the " Fly In The Ointment ".
Tour Operators are paying for the Resort Packages Portion in USD and already here in Canada they are adding currency surcharges.
Cruise Lines are in USD and will convert to CDN dollars so as you can imagine pricing is increasing dramatically.

  • Oil Companies Offer Short-Term Pain, Then Long-Term Gain For Dividend Investors [View article]
How low.....well it may be close to the bottom but the one thing I would suggest that it will start to increase again. The Saudi's may flood the market for market share and the other producers will keep pumping.
I have often thought the Oil Cartel is simply a Cartel Of Convenience , in the end it really becomes " Every Man For Themselves ".

I recall an article suggesting that the Saudi's have enough money in their Treasury to sustain three years of low gas prices before they would have to become concerned.

Absolutely agree , have been and continue to feel comfortable with my positions in Canadian Companies. As to exchange rates that too is part of the reality of Global Investing. My American positions currently are to my advantage.

Mountainguy2 , change is good but not simply to change. I have clients in the Alberta and they are concerned. I think over time the socialist type governments tend to implode but the damage they leave means the next Government is left to take care of the mess.
I accept that any Government , regardless of political stripe have an appetite for more taxes and more spending. this is the fundamental issue.
As you are aware in Alberta the province has had a good run and the reality is that changes have happened in the Oil Industry. Companies will adjust and there will be pain. I just read an Article in The Globe & Mail discussing housing in Fort McMurray. Tough times.
Canada by in large has done well over time , there are adjustment times but in the long haul we do better than most.
As yo are aware in Ontario we have the pleasure of a free spending , out of control Liberal Government that apparently believes like young Mr. Trudeau that " The Budget will fix itself ". Do tell.......

Yes and please do note that neither the NDP or the Liberals are friends to the Oil Industry. I am not touting any Political Party but suggesting what is the alternative?
I think to the original article thing could become ugly has merit.
Resource based economy , higher taxes and more social engineering at the expense of the taxpayer and small business is not helpful.
As to Ontario , the Ontario Premier is still marching to the same drum of spend , spend and spend some more. Rewarded with a Majority to plunder the Provincial Coffers for even more silly projects and spending the taxpayer's money.

Affordable Day Care , if you look at the current Quebec Day Care System you may well find the economics are not good. Unionized workers and massive amounts of tax dollars being pumped in to the program.

I would suggest that the Conservative Government may well be the best option from what is being offered. " Hold Your Nose And Vote ".
Observing what the other two Political Parties are offering , we would likely see increased taxation and government spending unleashed. The NDP Leader is suggesting one of his main priorities will be affordable day care for all Canadian Families. The Liberal Leader suggesting tax the rich....and he was the Leader that suggested " The Budget will balance itself".
Alberta has recently elected an NDP Government , a majority to boot and it will be extremely interesting to see what they will be able to over the next four years.
I do think as the economy transforms again and given that some events are outside the control of any one country , there will be buying opportunities in many excellent Canadian Companies.
In terms of housing , historically both Vancouver and Toronto have pushed the high end of pricing. Prices high of course they are and likely to continue the trending. Adjustments may happen but if they falter , they will rebound rather quickly I suspect.

  • Confucius Say, Commodities Are In Trouble [View article]
Very interesting reading and exactly what is and will continue to drive the commodity prices lower. As you indicated with approximately 18% plus of the world population this will weigh heavy on the commodity markets.
As the world moved to partner or do business with China the benefits were enjoyed and now as China focuses inward again , they will now suffer the downside.
I suspect this will make for an interesting ride for the Global Markets.

  • Reflections On The Greek Tragedy [View article]
With the focus still on Greece , I had commented regardless of their recent vote of
" NO " they were going to get the money one way or the other. The EU ( I am assuming originally was going to lift the less efficient economies up but it seems to have failed ).
It appears that the " bailout ' will covers Greece's structural issues for a period of time but will only be a band aid solution. The other PIGS must be eying this drama with considerable interest. If this " solution " does not work , I fear the others may well want to restart their agreements with the EU.With Greece's recent history of not following through with their agreements with the EU , be prepared for more turmoil internally for the Greek Government the the Greek people.

  • Pizza Pizza Royalty Corp.: Great On Yields But Low Upside Potential [View article]
Interesting article , I have considered adding Pizza Pizza to my RSP portfolio for some time.As you note , the share price tends to stay within a very small trading range but does provide an excellent dividend for Income Investors.
