colorado shale might be part of the answer in the future but it takes an awful lot of water to make a barrel of shale oil & you have to buy up some rancher's water rights first. shale was a hot item in 1927 but then east texas came in. there has been no further development of the various retorting technologies for the last 80 yrs. in the meantime we always have syncrude by 2-stage hydroliquefaction of illinois/west kentucky high-volatile bituminous coal if somebody wants to get cracking on that.
