  • Global Warming: Investment Implications  [View article]
many yrs ago heliarc welding was invented, the purpose being to minimize oxidation of the workpiece.
however helium is lighter than air so its blanketing capability is not too great.
for many yrs i've done TIG welding (some people call it MIG) using an argon bottle for blanketing. A40 is denser than air.
not once have i used a CO2 bottle. CO2 is an oxidizer @ high temperatures, reacts with some metals. last thing you want in your workshop is carbon monoxide.

  • Zinc to Shine from Two-Year Doldrums [View article]
    thanks for an interesting summary.

zinc (and copper, nickel) is found in nature as sulfide ores. zinc sulfide ores require roasting & then SO2 must be removed from the smelter offgas to avoid harm to the environment.

zinc is an important trace element in plant & animal nutrition.

a possible emerging use of zinc (as ferrite or titanate compounds) is for hydrogen-sulfide removal from coal-gasifier product gas, if the bugs can be worked out.
