Gregor, This is one hell of a good article! Excellent job! The comments are right on as well. California as a Sovereign State - has a nice ring to it. Perhaps they could even secede from the Union for a brief while - and then come back in after they have cleaned up their act. By the way, a lot of what you have outlined here could also apply to Scotland (sans the emphasis on the automobile).
5 Key Takeaways from SNL's Bank M&A Conference [View article]
Tom, At first glance "SNL" evokes you know what... it's too bad that a simple ampersand stands in the way of clarity of purpose. Then again, perhaps SNL (the comedic version) should do a piece on banking - it might be even more valuable than the one you report on here!
Fisking Scientific American on Peak Oil [View article]
In March of 1978, Scientific American published an article by Andrew R. Flower entitled "World Oil Production" in which the author opined that there was only about 15 years left in which to find alternative means, etc. etc. In the same issue there is an article about the "electronic" telephone that would remember numbers, take messages, compute, and, talk. Oh yeah, on the page following page 29 - there is an ad for Hertz rent-a-car with the sub-title "The Superstar in rent-a-car" featuring a full 2/3 page photo of some guy named O.J. Simpson running at full tilt in a 3-piece business suit with briefcase and trench coat in his right hand. only his left shoe is visible in the photo... which appears to be a slip on type with a metal decorative buckle. Yes indeed! Time does change things.
What the GM Volt Means to the U.S. Economy [View article]
The article seems to be more of a paean to the Obama administration than anything touching reality with regard to the Volt. The car is due to be in our marketplace in 2010 - it would, indeed, be wonderful to see but, I have grave doubts about the ability of GM to accomplish this task and; if it is a $40,000 price on the Munroney sticker... I believe it will be D.O.A. In the interim period, Toyota, Honda and others will be on their third or fourth iteration of some very drivable and affordable hybrids with MPG in the 40 to 50+ range. Tesla is a neat vehicle as well, but, has anyone here taken a hard look at the Aptera? This is where our future lies in terms of automotive ingenuity.
