To the contrary. MLP ETF's are specifically designed to distribute mostly tax advantaged dividends.

Give the lady some credit for her fascinating analysis of NAV and discount/premium of these vehicles.
Please note that TYG's distributions for 2011 were defined as qualified dividends and are therefore taxed as such. They project that the same might be the case for 2012. So, one should not assume that distributions on TYG and similar ETF's are always tax advantaged.

  • Sale-Leaseback Legend Comes Closer To Becoming A REIT [View article]
One last shot Brad. My only concern with converting into a REIT Is that they expose themselves to the whims of the institutional investors, including the high frequency traders, who have a very short time horizon, and could not care less about fundamentals, dividends and such.

Thanks for the thorough article and the encouragement. I have owned the stock for years and cannot be happier with the results. Ones it falls prey to the high frequency hedge fund crowd, intrinsic value or dividend has no meaning. But, it can create a good buying opportunity, as might be the case now.

Brad, it is the overall investment discipline rather than the diversification of assets that makes this company as successful as it is. They value the properties they purchase by its income potential only. It is that simple.

This one is a real gem which I have owned for many years. It is to show that even under distressed economic conditions, a company can thrive, under sound management. Unfortunately, for each such company, there are many in the same space, which have stumbled badly.

  • Enerplus Cuts Its Dividend In Half [View article]
ERF initiated a dividend reinvestment plan which allows reinvestment of the dividend at a 5% discount just before cutting the dividend. I have a feeling that the response was very weak and pushed them, in the absence of cash, to cut the dividend. As far as PGH is concerned, they might be in a relative better position, but their stock has not fared much better over the years. For me, both are a source of capital losses, which will reduce my tax liabilities.

They certainly did the right thing under the circumstances.

However, this is another example that if one is interested in income, one should stick with bonds. All these alternative income vehicles, seem to, at the end, produce capital losses.

  • CommonWealth REIT: Beware The Dividend Trap [View article]
Forbes keeps pushing this stock, claiming that it is a tremendous value play. However, even the most asset rich company can drive itself into the ground, if badly managed, which seems to be the case here.
