  • Russia escalates tensions over Ukraine [View news story]
Hogwash- Guantanamo is nothing like what Russia is doing in Crimea. First, the "uprising" to which you refer started in November, not 6-7 weeks ago, and was the result of Ukranians fearing a return to Russian control. They didn't face down snipers because the West promised them some cash.

Second, Russia has formally recognized the sovereignty of the Ukraine- that's why the Ukraine gave up their nukes. The US never recognized the legitimacy of Cuba's ruler. Last, Guantanamo is about 15 square miles in the middle of nowhere. Look at a map- your analogy is waaaay off.

Sure, Russia has a vested interest in the Crimea. So did Germany in Poland and France circa 1939.

  • Second season of House of Cards delivers for Netflix [View news story]
Couldn't agree more, as far as the second season goes. First season was interesting, the plot this season is weak, the writing wooden and unbelievable, and frankly, the political leanings of the producers have started to leak into the program. I'd give it 1 star, and sure won't be watching the next season.

  • In a defeat for organized labor, Volkswagen workers reject union [View news story]
"Right to Scab". Yeah, people should be forced to join a union or be unable to find employment. Because if they don't want to join fundamentally left organizations they are "scabs". Sounds really American-great philosophy there, Lenin.

  • Banned SodaStream ad is a hit [View news story]
They do. The CEO said if he could he'd get his money back, but as it is, the SB commercial will have a different line at the end.

  • EV automakers ponder the sound of non-silence [View news story]
I have to disagree- you must not run on or near roads. A car's sound is the #1 indicator of proximity to me when running (when car is approaching from behind, obviously). I usually run opposite traffic, but this is not always possible. Even when facing traffic, a car's sound is a valuable source of information.

EV's worry me because of how quiet they are, and due to the local tendency to get "target fixation". Outside of running, EV noisemakers will be invaluable in busy parking lots and the like.

  • Starbucks cards: Easy gift for consumers, cash cow for the company [View news story]
The only reason I bought a $5 gift card- for my wife, was the $5 credit to my card. In other words- a 50% discount! Of course, we burned those in 2 consecutive days . . .

The "revamp" is a disaster. My AOL dial up email in the 90s was quicker. Opened a gmail account as a result.

  • Wal-Mart sees another headwind [View news story]
I find it extremely unlikely that Walmart shoppers are that forward looking. More likely shoppers are finding that while the prices are great, it's not worth the tuberculosis.

  • Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News [View article]
No, I don't think it's too much to spend, considering, i.e., that I have a significantly better chance of surviving cancer, as the article observes.

I can't believe PBS cites the U.K. as an example, considering the disaster that is their healthcare system. Yeah, by all means, our healthcare is too expensive, let's follow the other "developed" nations- dying on a gurney in an ER because no one got to me is a small price to pay. And it cuts down our healthcare expenditures!

  • Apple roundup: 5S/5C mix, Apple TV software, A7 production [View news story]
A tiny data point, but FWIW there were 40 folks or so in line at a small Verizon store here in Memphis- all for a new iphone. I've never seen more than 5 people in the entire store- and I walk by it 3x a week at least on my way to SBUX.
