  • How Gas Prices Are Changing Consumer Behavior [View article]
With the highest gas prices in the nation ($4.45 for regular on 6/10/08) the San Francisco Bay area is definitely doing all those things. They cancelled "Spare the Air" days (free public transit when smog level too high) due to budget cuts but it didn't matter because all public transit is now full. Folks who bike/bus or bike/train often have to catch a later bus/train because the racks are full; they've added 2nd bike cars to several trains. Hopefully, with the expanded income from new ridership, the bus, shuttle connector routes will expand and people will continue to use them for good. I've learned to let the kids whine when I refuse to drive them short distances, repaired my bike tire and, in general spent more time working on the myriad projects around home I never finished.
