Wal-Mart and Amazon: Price Wars Reopen Question of Intermediaries [View article]
Who employs more people in your town? The little mom and pop shops with the inflated prices or the Walmart? Walmart is also one stop shopping. Nobody is forcing you to buy inferior goods. That's the big picture.

Scot: I think you are missing a key point about limited inventory. Almost all of these products are housed at the manufacturers location. All any of these merchants do is drop ship items from the manufacturer. Therefore you have a commodity item once you know the UPC number. So if Walmart, Amazon or anyone else is not putting some kind of a warranty or backing up the product why buy it from them? An example of a different kind of retailer would be Costco, who allows you to return whatever you buy via their website back to one of their stores if you are not happy. (90 day limits on TV's & Computers). You shouldn't buy anything online without asking yourself the question "What if I have to return it?"

Sydney: You mention Microsoft as benefiting from Netbook Computers. This is not true. Microsoft software is a resources hog, especially in memory but also requiring 4-8GB hard drive space or more just for the operating system. Most of the netbooks use solid state hard drives and microsoft operating systems burp and choke on them. The real winner in the netbook arena is Linux Software and especially Ubuntu (free software package that includes Open Office). These Linux software packages can run very well on as little as 512mb memory and a 4gb solid state(ssd) drive. The low overhead and free software make a perfect marriage for netbooks.

You are absolutely right about Amazon. That would mean they would have to start collecting State Sales tax on every item sold, that ships in a State where Netflix even has one office. In this case they have distribution centers almost everywhere in the US. It would end up costing Amazon money and lost business. Very insightful article.
