  • ConocoPhillips: The Time To Buy Is Now [View article]
Although I agree COP would be decent for someone looking to get an oil company in their portfolio, I still would prefer PSX with their natural gas and chemicals businesses; and they are also spinning off a MLP later this year. (not to mention consistent dividend hikes for a company not even independent for a year yet)

  • Reefer Madness: Pot Stocks In A Bubble [View article]
Alan, very good article and I have seen you banging the drum to try and demand rationality from the masses of uneducated investors on some of the other related articles. I do agree with your risk assessments entirely, and that all of these penny stocks are grossly over-valued to their current underlying fundamentals; however, who is currently informed enough to predict future earning potentials of companies currently conducting business in an industry still mostly illegal (but seemingly gaining support in a strong way almost daily)?

I have to imagine companies starting up in the marijuana industry would be denied traditional bank loans, so issuing stock is the most realistic way to get the necessary capital for the research and development of products that would likely be popular (once legal to be sold). If marijuana legalization doesn't come to be as quickly as everyone seems to be hoping, it is fair to call most all of these companies sinking ships; however, if it does become legalized, it is said the marijuana industry is potentially a multi-hundred billion dollar industry and a company with a $300m market cap/and a footprint of good looking products should seem paltry.

Big tobacco companies and institutional investors will not touch this industry until all of the legal gray areas are gone, but it is undeniable that huge growth, and a movement unlike anything since prohibition in the 1920's is upon us.... (potentially!)

youngdividend.....Jim Cramer also told his investors to buy Bear Stearns right before they collapsed and investors lost everything.....He also recommended buying Apple at $700.....he also recommended selling Sprint at $2 before it tripled and COP over PSX when PSX has doubled in less than a year.

  • Chronically Criminal: Shielding The Public From Medical Marijuana [View article]
I've read every word posted of every marijuana-related-stock news story I can find lately. I do believe we are embarking on a movement toward marijuana legalization; the federal deficits are crippling the economy and the medicinal benefits are proven and the potential tax revenues are undeniable. There is not anything in history that anyone alive and posting on seeking alpha can compare the potential of marijuana legalization to.

The risk is that, like the .com bubble, tons of upstart companies with neat sounding products will start to appear, not end up profiting, and inevitably go bankrupt (but this is still America and we should hope we still have lots of "dreamers"). That being said, MJNA is certainly a speculative stock, but they do seem to be making products that would be exciting once legal gray areas aren't in place any longer.

Disclosure: I am long MJNA and also a few other speculative pro-marijuana legalization stocks....however I feel comfortable enough to call my relatively small investments "playing" and If all of them go bankrupt I promise I won't write articles encouraging people to short a stock, or not take some chances.

....here are the others I'm in (and I'd appreciate more ideas from anyone)
CBIS - ( bio-tech experimenting with cannabis related cancer and aids treatments)
MWIP (proprietary financial services for the medicinal marijuana / health industry)
    PHOT (home growing systems)
AQNM (air and systems for growing)
    RFMK (selling portable vaporizers)

  • Mondelez's Sugary Valuation Could Cause Wealth Decay [View article]
It appears the CEO pay plan is tied pretty heavily to stock performance. That is the first thing I look for in these spin-offs, stock incentive. I take comfort in knowing management will do whatever it takes to make it work. Each one of these new emerging markets will be different and growing pains are to be expected.

I have never understood anyone who has the stones to short a penny stock......that is crazy. The company may be overvalued, but when in history has there ever been a legislative movement like the one going on now? The company is also offering a forward guidance on Monday I believe.

JET1C......a little patience.....it hasn't even been an independent company for a year yet. Most spin-off stocks won't reach potential until at least late second year. The book value per share is over $20.00 so I think the potential rewards outweigh the risk here.
