Corn Ethanol's Federal Subsidy Glut [View article]
Af6196,
I agree with you 100% with on corn ethanol. It a negative EROEI and consumes huge amounts of fertilizer (made from natural gas) and pesticides (a petrochemical). Corn ethanol is not an energy solution, but a vote pandering platform
There are many legitimite ethanol solutions out there:
1) Sugar ethanol (from Brazil) has a postive EROEI, but is currently heavily taxed to appease the corn lobby.
2) Ethanol can also be made from sweet sorghum which has the advantages of: +EROEI, no pesticides, no fertilizer and can provide food as a by product.
3) Cellulosic ethanol is another possibility. It is made from non-edible plants like switch grass as well as wood chips, corn cobs and other plant waste.
4) Ethanol can be made from algae. This technology is in its infancy, but algae has the added advantage of sucking up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or from sources like power plants.
