Jimbo,
I agree 100% with you. There many sides to the oil sands developments.
1) They provide secure oil to the USA from neighbors who don't use the proceeds to fund terrorism against the USA and its allies.
2) There are many environmental concerns with the oil sands no doubt. But companies like Syncrude and Suncor have made great strides. The have increased the recycling rate of water used to the point where only 3 barrels or water are needed (instead of the previous 10 barrels) to produce 1 barrel of oil
3) Suncor has developed technology where the reclamation rate of mined oil sands land has decreased from decades to weeks.

While it is possible to replacing natural gas for generating the heat needed in oil sands processing, it cannot be replaced entirely. Natural gas is still needed as a source of hydrogen in final stages of oil sand processing. See the link below:

gtmcduffy,
At first I thought your Dick Cheney idea might work if we changed his name to Richard Duchene, but with that weak heart of his (a pre-existing condition) he would bankrupt our country with his medical bills in no time.
You guys are a bit too socialist for us. You spend hundreds of billions of dollars bailing out incompetently run businesses (i.e. banks and auto industry) for their losses. I like the old America better which was based on Darwinian principals, where the fittest businesses survive and the weak ones don't.

Gtmcduffy,
Thanks for lining up the nine states for us. But Canada has a few conditions as well before entering this deal.
1) Need to run a credit check on the US. 2) Need to see if any leading government officials have evaded taxes in the past. 3) We will require a very large bailout payment too. It seems everyone who is big enough requests and usually gets them (banks, auto makers, California, porn industry, etc). Canada is certainly big enough. 4) We don't mind gets occasional visits from Obama, but please keep Hillary (and Bill) in Washington.

It is understandable why the author would want the US to take over Canada. Looks all its strengths.
1) Socialized medicine takes care of everyone in Canada. In the USA, the rich can afford good doctors, government medicare takes care of the poor and the uninsured middle class (40 million people) is screwed.
2) The banking system in Canada has never failed. If you can't afford to make payments on a home, you never get a mortgage from a bank.
3) Lawyers are NOT given free reign and nuisance lawsuits are rare there.
4) Canada is a resource bonanza; Oil, gas, uranium, gold, silver, nickel, timber, water, electricity, etc.

To expand on the previous comments about US investments in Canada.
Canada is the largest provider of oil to the USA. $150 billion dollars is spent by the USA for Canadian oil. Unlike money spent for Middle East oil which moves one way, the Canada is the largest buyer for US exports ($215 billion according to cia.gov). There is a circuluation of money between the USA and Canada, unlike the money spent for Middel East oil which never returns to the USA and is spent on royal palaces, indoor ski hills and underwater hotels.

I would not consider any financial institution a top stock in my book. I much prefer energy trusts with higher and stable dividend yields. Oil prices will only go in one direction in the long run (up, up and up)
1) COSWF pays 12% and will likely increase the dividend 20% further according to Kurt Wulff (SA contributor) 2) PWE pays 13% 3) ERF pays 12% (They announced a recent increase for September) 4) HTE pays 17%
Yes, the income trust structure will be dismantled soon, but under the new (or conventional) corporate structure will trusts continue to pay regular dividends as before.
The trick here is to properly structure trusts your portfolio. 1) Within a retirement account (IRA for USA or RRSP for Canada) the dividends are taxed and the dividend taxes are essentially lost money. 2) Outside a retirement account, the taxes paid on the dividends can deducted on your tax return and offset your total taxes due.

1) Approval of shareholders and Canadian government, HTE share price will not go above $10.
2) Non-Approval of either current shareholders or Canadian government, HTE share price will tank to $3 or $4 as KNOC is forced to unload its holdings.
3) Another Asian oil company enters the competition and bids HTE to $15 or $20.
I would say that scenario #1 is the most likely at 60%, scenario #2 is possible at 30% and scenario #2 is the least likley at 10%.

4) Oil sands provides countless well paying jobs to people from Eastern Canada that have a experienced high unemployment rate.

Judging the stock price jumps today of PWE and BTE (9% and 0.65% respectively), many investors seem to be betting that PWE will be the next target.
