Globally I would be willing to bet that the world is less effecient at using oil, despite technical innovations, because manufacturing has moved from U.S. to China and we all know how energy inefficient they are. They make up for that with lower labor costs etc. so their total costs are still below what ours would be to make the same goods.

I'm not sure you are right to reduce their reported EPS by $265M for the reason given because they should have added the $265M to their provision for bad debt during the quarter. The net affect on EPS is zero. They just handled it differently on the P&L
