No doubt about it from the comments. Capitalism is the real Scarlet Pimpernel. It' here, it's there, it's everywhere. Damn that Capitalist Pimpernel! It's in the past, it's in the present, and every day and every place it wears a different disguise.

And btw School for Scoundrels is a great film. Especially when you look beneath the humor. How often, for example do you stop to consider how much intimidation and domination is a factor in "salesmanship"? So much fear out there that some people can be intimidated by a stranger over the phone.

Unlucky that Europeans having achieved perfection lost the will to live.

I must have been in a Donnie Darko time bubble. Apparently we went from Coolidge and Mellon directly to Obama and Bernanke.

No matter how much power and money the gov and fed get they never seem to "own" a problem. Why it's the fault of the opposition party. Who's the opposition in a 1/2-1/2 party system. It's capitalism's fault. What does the word capitalism signify? The communists in the Soviet Union were blaming reactionaries and capitalism until the end. Let's go back to blaming demons and vampires. It's a lot more fun.

When we have a full soviet style police state established will it still take 75 years for people to catch on? In fact people aren't really being fooled about the nature of the game at a fundamental level. It's really about fear. They don't have the guts to stand up for themselves against thugs. And many don't have the guts to get in the game and duke it out with them. They really want a niche were they can vegetate.

Maybe Donnie Darko meets School for Scoundrels.

  • How Low Can This Market Go? The 40 Percent Solution [View article]
What was the rate of inflation in the 30s? With a real inflation rate of 10% and the Dow at 10,000 2 years from now, what's the value? I'm predicting a gradual shift to genteel poverty like Britain in the 1st half of the 20th minus the world wars. Actually praying.
