And it is not only the god's servers that have to be constantly functioning: add reliable ISPs as well. One can always read his email and docs offline but in order to get access to the couds, internet (or ticket to paradise) is necessary as well. You gotta pay your dues to the church as well!

my biggest issue is the lack of A2DP (bluetooth stereo). how this can be omitted from a music jukebox phone? i guess it was all down to money: better sell for $30 cable headphones (appox at $29 profit) than open it to competition.
What makes you think the subsidy is up to $400? I purchased my 1st gen iPhone for $400 (8GB) walked out the AT&T store and never activated it with them. All those phones that were being sold on eBay were actually acquired the same way. It was too comon of a practice and all too evident to AT&T that their iPhone sales are much higher than the activations. This is why they changed the game: now you have to activate it in store so they lock you in with a contract. The kickback is the same to Apple, only that they are not simply distributing phones without any comission, now they pocket the service contract fees(the voice plan) and bill you $10 extra for the data plan to cover the subsidy with some interest on it.

The reason for the in-store activation is completely different: sign the contract right there or charge extra if the customer wants to use it with t-mobs. Luckily I purchased my 1st gen iPhone in a store, walked out and used the sim unlock utils that come with it to use it on the t-mobs network. This is why now it is 'cheaper' to buy it.
