    @FIB lets put a third group

    Group 'C': FIB Group -> play the trend -> play trade technicals.
    as always very respectable !

  • AMD's Processor Roadmap And Its Implications For Consoles [View article]
    HBM and FPGA are totally different things.
    However since GPU can be used for tasks that also do FPGA like was the case of coin mining or pattern search and Analysis, HBM brings new advantage to GPUs.

    For example FPGA are added to server for specific processes like pattern search and matching. FPGA are very efficient in this regards and also save power. GPUs are used in similar ways, they are more flexible than FPGA, highly parallel processing but power hungry. With HBM memory clock goes down 5 times and thus making GPUs more power efficient and at the same time increase speed because the wide I/O.
    May be GPUs can regain back some tasks that were moved to FPGA because of their efficiency, but since there's no HBM GPUs in the market we do not know that.
    In paper all projects work but field applications is another thing.... Will have to see from June and on how HBM based GPU evolve !

    I already saw that Article but its analysis is very very light !
    And if he predict that, I want to see his shorts on AMD !

    @Fib
    You know you are the expert trader !!! And I respect that ! and your right, going in AMD now is gambling not trading !

    @Fib

    I think that for Intel there's nothing more:

    Intel:

    A) Servers, there's no more than 99% of the market
    B) Mobile, they pay to be there... not competitive enough and have a couple of big competitors Mediatek and Qualcomm and a couple more that do not need Intel , APPLE and Samsung.
    C) IoT is big but will have a lot of players: all above + Texas Instruments, FreeScale, Microchip.... Nobody needs Intel in the IoT end points
    D) PC is a declining or Flat dominating most of the laptop and desktop market in CPU

    Nvidia
    A) Nvidia dominates 75% of the GPU Market.
    B) Shield Console ? Can it fight and win against MS and Sony ??
    C) If it can't Win with shield and AMD starts to take some market share it will fall like a RockD) If Intel or AMD puts on the Market a Processor / APU with similar GPU power of the 960 Nvidia will start to have a rough time.

    Nvidia do not have other way to go !

    So there are two options, there's no other way to go:

    A) AMD gain market shares in processors and GPU -> Need Zen to be good and increase market share in GPU pioneering with HBM based GPU.
    B) Bankrupt

    So we have two options or you are in group A or you are in Group B
    I'm in group A
    Now Why I'm in group A:
    1) Because AMD will regain Market Share in GPU with HBM and some more GPU going to APPLE and OEMs.
    2) Zen Will be much better than Bulldozer, better than Intel probably NO, but price performance will be good enough and much better than any thing currently offered by AMD.
    3) Semi-Custom, Old ( Sony - MS) and New ( probably Nintendo) and other two will allow AMD to survive till Zen is rolling.
    4) ATIC needs AMD to be successful because they have 19% stake and because will allow them to make Global Foundries also to be successful. So they will support directly or indirectly thru GF.
    5) AMD has oxygen till 2018, enough to roll Zen and even a Zen APU and a new Server Processor.
    So FIB you are in group A or Group B ?

    @Fib,
    AMD is going 14nm with Global Foundries, no other alternative.

    Said by AMD People: "20nm is a light node", probably used in some design and transition but Zen will come in 14nm FinFet

    Citicorp, JPMorgan Chase & Co., Barclays Plc and Royal Bank of Scotland Plc agreed to plead guilty to felony charges of conspiring to manipulate the price of U.S. dollars and euros.

    @xx x86 32 bit already expired and is worthless. The value is in AMD side the x86- and Intel side is the new (not so new) SSE extensions AVX and other instructions.
    The agreement covers what was valid at the moment of making the agreement and all the extensions created later.
    So basically no one can "charge" the other for using what the other created....

    Developing 14nm and than a year later or so 10nm require a lot of investment. Intel and Samsung need to pay those investments, feed FABS, etc. licensing to GF brings more income...
    Do not see how APPLE and AMD are competition. In fact Apple is introducing slowly AMD GPUs: iMac, Mac Pro and recently MacBook Pro.AMD is not making mobile chips so its not a competition for Samsung, the theory of the enemy of my enemy ..... not sure on that.However I'm sure GF has restrictions about to whom they can produce 14nm based chips.May be Samsung has interests in AMD, but do not want to wake up the monster ( Intel ) yet .....

    @Vlad,
    That's Intel using its grip with OEMs and OEMS saving money but not making the best products. I don´t say that its not the trend, because it is, but Intel is far away from Nvidia and AMD. Some day, may be Intel will have the same or even better GPU, but not yet.
    That's why APPLE puts a Radeon M370x in the Top of the line MacBook Pro which has an Intel Processor with Iris Pro Inside !

    Finally its more than likely Intel great "contributions"

    "PC users with AMD-based GPUs that have installed the new Windows 10 Insider Preview build 10122 should look for a bug fix available via Windows Update. This update should solve a known issue that was causing the Microsoft Edge browser to crash when running on PCs with AMD graphics chips."

    So you say Samsung announcement is a lie ?

    "Samsung has announced that it plans to ramp 10nm production in 2016"

    One more thing: Not that I'm optimist about AMD in the short term but Mubdala that owns GF need AMD as its biggest customer, if AMD succeed, GF follows. If AMD fails, GF will have harsh time !
