There is no doubt about the Obama position regarding coal, provided you believe anything DC has to say these days. I'm long of ANR from 15, along with several other coal, natural gas, and alternative plays which use the two efficiently and with an eye to the future --- both in Canada and the USA.

Beware of the geo-political climate. You're not in Kansas anymore, Dorothy. Any disruption and oil goes to 100 a barrel and higher, which is hopefully a dollar denomination.]]>

The American taxpayer bailed out these institutions. In return they horded our money, raised interest rates, cut credit lines, installed outrageous penalties, and generally profited from cheap money while Americans lost their jobs and their homes.

Now they expect people to stand by and watch them get paid millions in bonus money while the country is still reeling? Let them use the money to help fix the problems that were created and start putting these criminals behind bars. At some point, enough is enough.]]>

The need to print more money to pay for a steady diet of increasing debt would surely be inflationary at some point in the near future. On another note, gold is very undervalued if you consider where it was 25 years ago and where it is now --- which would price it at around $2000.

I like Roubini and respect him a great deal. This time, however, he may be wrong.]]>

Harvest Energy: East vs. West in Terms of Oil http://seekingalpha.com/article/168594-harvest-energy-east-vs-west-in-terms-of-oil?source=feed#comment-729160 729160
As this article points out, the problem of demand destruction vs. supply destruction is viewed differently by the East and the West. We tend to think short term, while the East tends to view the long term picture. With the energy markets, a longer term point of view is the correct one. Demand will eventually overwhelm supply in the long run or any type of major geo-political event would create a short term spike and economic chaos.

There is a possibility that, good or bad, the Canadians may not want to sell a strategic natural resource to a foreign company. Thus, I took the profits.

That said, I took the profits and added to my positions in PWE, BTE, and PGH. Still love the CONROYS for the dividends and as a hedge against a declining dollar.]]>

FCX said that Chinese demand for copper remains robust and, if you can believe our own government, the recession is over. On the other hand, the USA is still printing money and seems to be unable to get a grip on any type of fiscal policy, which is causing several BRIC nations to consider alternatives to the dollar, including gold and silver.

Like I said, it's a tough market to wrap your arms around with so much uncertainty, both at home and around the world.]]>

I actually read that Jim Cramer tell a viewer in his "Mad Mail" segment that he thought that swapping out of WMT into CVS or Walgreens was a good idea due to swine flu vaccinations. I know it has no bearing on this article, but I had to laugh. WMT is not a drug store, it's more of a supermarket play --- which is the reason that 130M customers a week shop at the store. It's an apples and oranges comparison.

Walmart will continue to provide value to consumers and shareholders. It's a good buy at these levels.]]>

The economy in Miami was based on the real estate business and tourism --- two industries which will not recover soon. The trickle down effect has caused hotels, car & boat dealers, restaurants, shops, and every other industry to tank as well. As a result, businesses are being boarded up, foreclosures are accelerating, and people are leaving the state.

Today LEN announced bad earnings, which was not a surprise. The statement that the company would "return to profitability" in 2010 is a bit hard to fathom, considering the circumstances.]]>

Walmart, on the other hand, has made a strong move into producing "sustainable" goods, which would require such goods to be manufactured here in the United States. Food & Beverage, home cleaning products, composting, personal care, and many other products that do not require a great deal of hand labor can be manufactured in this country. Very few companies have the manufacturing and logistics expertise to coordinate this type of venture, let alone the funds ---- and I believe this is exactly what Walmart intends to do with the full support of the government.

Such a move would create millions of new green collar jobs. It's not just foreign oil that America needs to wean off of in order to regain our independence ---- we need to re-establish our manufacturing base.

I wouldn't count Walmart out just yet. In fact, I rate the company a strong buy at fifty dollars a share.]]>

This is NOT an ethanol play. The synthetic fuels that are produced by both of these companies are going to play a very big role in the future of our oil policy. RTK has already signed deals with the US Air Force and has been approved to sell to commercial airliners. They also signed a deal with LAX to provide synthetic diesel for their trucks. This is just the beginning. SYNM has a joint venture with Tyson and is working with Emerson to lay out a grid, which bodes well for the future.

Both stocks merit research and a hard look. No doubt they are speculative, but I've made a great deal of money with both and continue to hold them in my portfolio.]]>
