  • China Urges Citizens to Buy Gold and Silver [View article]
Actually, there were two choices --- stock up on gold and silver or hold on to US dollars. Gold and silver won.

It appears that "Buy an Insolvent Company Day" is over and it's back to fundamentals --- which really do stink.

  • T. Boone Pickens' Hedge Fund Concentrates on Energy, Drops Basic Materials [View article]
I'm a big fan of the man and respect his knowledge, but his track record hasn't been great the last year.

Buying BUCY at around 28.45 and taking profits on JOYG. Trading out of WLT after a huge gain and adding to positions on ANR, which have not kept pace. Clean coal is going to be part of the agenda, along with natural gas. For an alternative play, I own RTK which is going to be a rocket.

Black gold, gold, and natural gas.... with a bit of old fashioned WWII technology in the mix.

  • History Lesson: September Is Best Month for Gold [View article]
Gold looks right, but got off to a shaky start in September. Bought a bit of EGO on the pullback. Think natural gas and oil is a better hedge against inflation, but you can't be too thin, too good looking, or have too much insurance. Thus I bought gold and will probably buy more as we continue to print dollars to pay for our follies.

  • 'Too Big to Fail' Has Gotten Much Bigger  [View article]
I don't get C or BAC, but I own both of them at substantially lower prices. Have already sold portions of both to cover my investment and a small profit, so I can sleep at night.

Have no idea what is too big to fail or what criteria is applied, but the only way to make back the money is to go with the mo. In this case you have to hold your nose and believe in the Tooth Fairy.

  • Four Reasons We're Headed Even Higher [View article]
The AIG move is so odd, that even the NY Times noticed it. When the government owns and is the only source of funding for the banking industry, the car industry, and who knows how many pension plans, it seems to me that driving the share price of AIG, Fannie, Freddie, and others up is another way to re- inflate government (I mean taxpayer) owned assets.

In regard to Doug Kass, I would not bet against the man begin right. He is very smart and should be taken seriously.

Pitch or catch? Government bails out AIG with taxpayer money, taxpayer gets the shaft, Wall Street gets rich. SOS, different day.

    Change you can believe in?

Like I said, it was undervalued and it still is even after the run up today. This company is now firing on all cylinders.

  • Rentech Inks Biofuel Deal with Eight LAX-Based Airlines for Their Ground Utility Vehicles [View article]
When you buy a spec stock for 47 cents and it goes up 2 dollars in less than a week all I can say is one thing ---- YAHOO!

Been accumulating this stock for almost a year and it finally paid off in spades and it's not done yet.

  • Credit Suisse's Take on Flash Trading, Dark Pools and National Market Regulation  [View article]
I didn't quite follow the RTK comment either, but captainccs seems to have caught what others missed.

RTK is indeed a renewable fertilizer and fuel play that shot up like a rocket last week after the company received approval for their patented technology to make commercial jet fuel. This follows approval from the US Air Force a few months back and a blowout quarter. Disclosure: I am long the stock

  • 7 'Magic Formula' Stocks of Particular Interest  [View article]
I've been buying PBT from 8 up to about 9.75 and then traded out about half the position at 13. Started to add again in the last few weeks, mainly for the dividend.

I've like both the Canroys and the American natural gas trusts for a while and have done well. Natural gas is historically cheap in relation to oil and figures to be a big part of our energy policy in the future. Some like LINE and ATN have moved up rather significantly, while others like HTE, PWE, PGH, and PBT have moved up less. Bought them for the dividends and I'm willing to be paid to wait.

  • Expect Big Gains from Sociedad Qumica y Minera de Chile [View article]
Been dollar cost averaging SQM from 15 up to the high 20s. It's a triple play on the future. One drawback may be if Bolivia decides to take a page out of the Venezuelan playbook but, sans that, it's a great stock to own as the auto industry converts to lithium batteries and the need for fertilizer rebounds.

  • Rentech Blows Away Estimates [View article]
I agree that we should reduce or eliminate our dependence on foreign oil but, if history provides a guideline, that would require the price of oil to escalate as a catalyst for change.

Either way, RTK is a beneficiary and the stock price should begin to reflect the core fundamentals of the company. Right now, the company is under covered by Wall Street analysts and undervalued.

  • Excel Maritime Diluting Shareholders [View article]
Without dividends, this group is for trading at best. Can't even remember how many times I've owned EXM in the last year. I'm nibbling again at 7.50.

For dividends, I bought PRGN and SBLK in the 2s and held them.
