I have a nice and early retirement because I planned for it 30 years ago. I invested carefully and consistantly. I learned constantly and applied that learning. I reviewed my investments carefully and regularly, bought and sold prudently. I managed my debt carefully. Over time I built a great portfolio and learned from my mistakes. Most importantly I relied on only myself to have what I needed to make it happen. I learned early that your employer and the government are not interested in your success so I did not factor them in.
I recommend that you always keep that in mind and it can happen for anyone out there if you put your mind to it.

I put "peak oil" in the same catagory as "global warming". Both are over hyped. There is plenty of oil and oil were don't even know about yet. As far as warming is concerned, it was warmer during the "dark ages" than it is now. There have been warming and cooling cycles for eons. Where I live we have had record cold temps this spring. Don't insult me by saying "global warming" caused that.

In your dealings with stocks, date them, never marry them. It's OK to date them for a very long time as long as they are a suitable partner in your portfolio.

OXY is the only stock I ever bought without researching it fully. Much of America's "old money" and their trust funds have owned it for decades. At $50 per share in '09 how could I resist? I have continually added to my position on big dips and never regretted owning it. Thanks for a great article.
