Airline Deregulation: Now Do It for Real [View article]
To Felix Salmon: With all due respect my friend, that comment may be one of the most irresponsible and outright ignorant ones I've ever heard on any subject. ["I don't care if my airline makes money or not"]........Really?..... got to be kidding me. Aside from the airlines' ability to maintain current safety levels, your comment sums up just one of the really big problems in this country and with our economy. The whole concept of "as long as the price is cheap, it must be good, right?", is killing this country. There is a cost associated with any product or service and the price to the consumer must, except for brief anomalies, at least equal that cost. If what you say is OK for the airlines, then why not for all industries. Let's just have every industry in the economy be totally bankrupt. I mean, as long as the price is low for you, it must be OK, right?...............I... unbelievable to actually hear a comment like that from someone in your position. If you like deregulation, fine. If you disagree with someone like Crandall, fine. But you should probably use some common sense and actual economic analysis instead of saying something like, "I don't care if my airline make money or not! translation: "everyone should only care about the bottom line to themselves, not what effect it may have on our society". We'd live in even a worse world if everyone thought like that. I sincerely hope you really didn't mean that or it came out wrong or something, because I have a hard time believing anyone could really want that type of industry.
