shorting shorts. why not buy SSO instead, 2X S&P 500? then you don't have to come up with the shares to short the short. can't short equities in retirement accounts and most individual investors don't have the capital to meet short requirements. just thinking out loud. :-)

that's what everyone said about march-17-2008 right when bear stearns blew up. took six months and the rats were jumping off the ship. the higher the market goes up here, the greater the chances of a oct-2008 scenario repeating in the later half of 2009. i hope the market doesn't crash but folks have very short memories in the U.S.

  • Thursday Outlook: Commodities, Global Markets [View article]
hi dave, i agree with your general assessment that this week is looking like last week and we need to see how the next 2 days go to get a clearer picture of what the market wants to do. however, some technical analysis of my own suggests that this weeks trend in the aggregate S&P 500 is weighted more to the downside. this means it will take heavier volumes of buying than last week to maintain equilibrium, let alone go higher by weeks end.

  • S&P 500 Volume [View article]
take every opportunity to sell the s&p 500 on days of strength. the index could go higher from here but not much more before it will have to crash back to earth. a higher s&p 500 from here substantially increases the probability of a severe snap-back this summer.

sell the S&P 500 into the strength....the index is still way out of balance with more room to the downside.

hi drew, i highly respect your opinion and hope you're right. however, just when you thought it was safe to go out to deeper waters, unexpected nasty storms have a propensity of suddenly brewing up out of seemly nowhere.

if the data in the chart is correct, we have the most DEFLATED economy on record. unfortunately, this is nothing to be proud of. 'green shots' people are either in extreme denial or have NO CLUE.

  • A Summertime Short Play with SDS [View article]
bigjake: i understand your apprehension. getting burned doesn't feel too good. it's happened to all us at one time or another. just consider how far the market has run up since the beginning of april. having a little insurance and not needing it is much better than having none and wishing you had a little glass of water to cool the pain. that's all. i wouldn't advocate going whole hog into SDS at this point. now that WOULD BE a fool's errand.

  • The Problems with 'Hedge Fund Strategy' Funds [View article]
i follow your logic. i would posit that most, not all, retail investor are generally behind the curve when it comes to understanding market concepts, jargon and terminology. therefore what seems new to them is in fact something that's playing in the 10th inning. in other words means, retail investors catch on when the game is about to end imminently.
