  • EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia approves Spain's plan to recapitalize four nationalized banks, including Bankia, thereby clearing the way for the companies to receive €37B from the eurozone's ESM bailout fund. However, the banks' bondholders will face losses of €10B, while thousands of staff are likely to lose their jobs after Almunia rules that the banks must close up to half their branches within five years. [View news story]

  • Petrobras (PBR) reportedly has enlisted Citigroup to shop its Houston-area refinery as it continues to shed assets to help fund offshore drilling back home in Brazil. The 100K bbl/day refinery is well located to receive growing crude supplies coming out of shale formations in south and west Texas, but a sale could result in a loss for PBR, which paid nearly $1.2B for the facility. [View news story]

  • Petrobras (PBR -0.9%) says its October oil and gas output improved from September but still lagged year-ago figures, a five-month trend due to maintenance at the offshore Campos Basin. During the month, PBR produced an average 2.58M boe/day in Brazil and abroad, 1.3% less than 2.62M Y/Y. Production is falling even as PBR moves ahead with a five-year $237B investment plan[View news story]

  • The euro quickly gives up 0.3% on the French downgrade. CAC-40 futures showed the tiniest of dips, but have returned to about unchanged. Keep an eye on French bond yields to see if they continue tracking the core, rather than the periphery. Ten-year OATS yield 2.07%. The 2-year is at a very Aaa-like 0.11%. [View news story]
