While I certainly agree with the other arguments the OP made, I question the negative effect on Autozone and O'reilly. The poor people and others who would have bought these used cars will instead spend more money on repairing their existing used cars--thus buying more parts from Autozone and O'reilly.

I think GM will have to declare bankruptcy anyway to deal with the dealer closure issue. It cost GM more than a billion in paying off dealers to close its Oldsmobile division. So it will either have to pay dealers off, face expensive lawsuits, or declare bankruptcy to have these franchise contracts voided.
