  • Penske Picks Up 100 12L CNG Westport/Cummins CNG Trucks [View instapost]
Is this move by Penske and Freightliner the chicken or the egg?

--Or are we now past that analogy and on to straight customer and supplier economics?

This is important because NatGas wins on the economics.

  • Westport to Expand Ford Super Duty Product Line [View article]
Ford recently inked a deal with GE that will put CNG-in-a-box at Ford related sites (GE announced the deal last week). So, Ford will have the whole package, CNG vehicles and fueling stations.

This is a smart move by Ford, and very good news for WPRT.

  • Westport Catalysts Remain Too Far Away For Investors [View article]
It looks like GE with CNG in a box is going to be the catalyst for WPRT.

Ford has just announced a partnership with GE that will, among other things, lead to CNG in a box fueling capacity offered through Ford.

So, Ford will be selling a Westport CNG truck, and providing the fueling points.

It sure does look like the CNG infrastructure is going to be in place very quickly, and it has tons of capital behind it.

  • Westport Innovations (WPRT): Q2 EPS of -$0.11 beats by $0.17. Revenue of $106.1M (+136% Y/Y). (PR)  [View news story]
Right now WPRT is still a 'story' stock. Is the story now better or worse than it was before the CMI 15 liter SI announcement? (i'd say better.)

Secondly, WPRT is about to change to a value/growth based valuation. I see this happening when the forecasted EPS turns positive, and this could happen with just a few quarters. I suspect it will happen much sooner than is currently forecast - based on the beat last quarter.

When there was any volume after hours the price was up @2%. There was almost no volume at the lower prices. This is not a heavily traded stock in the first place, so the after hours market too thinly traded to be an indicator of the true market.

  • Westport Innovations (WPRT): Q1 EPS of -$0.44 misses by $0.10. Revenue of $88.6M (+132.5% Y/Y) misses by $1M. Shares -4.4% AH. (PR)  [View news story]
I recommend listening to the conference call. Several important issues were addressed directly (strategic partnerships, SI/direct injection, 12 liter vs 15, China growth, and quick rollout refueling capabilities in NA).

If a growth company invests in more partnerships and distribution potential and as a result misses on quarterly EPS, but comes in @in-line on revenue, is that a bad thing?

  • Westport Innovations Is Weakening - Take Profits And/Or Short It [View article]
According to WPRT investor relations the Cummins ISX15 G engine is cummins only - no Westport involvement.

I still think companies (such as westport) that facilitate the utilization of the US nat gas reserves are in a great position.

"Cummins Westport, our joint venture with Cummins Inc., designs, engineers and markets spark-ignited natural gas engines for North American transportation applications such as trucks and buses." -Westport Innovations company description/disclosure

I can't believe that this article has not been modified or retracted. It is clearly false and misleading. All indications are that Westport is directly involved in the new SI engine.

"they instead mention that they will be using CMI's technology. The somewhat obvious conclusion is that CMI is building this one without WPRT involvement." - DW

I just did some research on the new 15 liter SI engine. The claim that this is CMI technology follows a paragraph that touts the Cummins Westport partnership for smaller SI engines.

Then I looked at one technology, SEGR, that the new engine utilizes, and it is explicitly stated that this is Westport related technology.

So, I think you ASSUMED that Westport was not part of the new engine. Simple research shows otherwise. Your "obvious conclusion" is obviously wrong.

That said the stock is speculative, it has no dividend and poor historical earnings. However, looking forward - WPRT is a screaming BUY.
