Geely is no fool. They are not buying for Volvo; they are buying for the advanced vehicle technology. They will run with the brand as long as the sales support this. The reality is Geely is Chinese... Do you expect them to maintain the development, design, and manufacturing in Goteborg?
Tarnishing a brand is of little interest to the parties making these lux brand acquisitions. If this were the case Tata would not have made their purchases.

No bailout will translate to success for the big 3 in the long run. Bankruptcy is a shoe-in for them to restructure (this time get it right big 3!) that will improve their competitiveness. Not to say that this will not be painful in the short run, but they cannot continue to bleed and support this labor force that the UAW has essentially priced out of the market.

This is a great piece and coincidentally I could not agree more. With a bailout what would the two or three do differently in the short run such that they will emerge from their destitution? Without a bailout they would perhaps reevaluate the marketing strategy and conduct an honest market risk analysis so that they will align production with consumer demand.
The current situation is largely executive complacency, product marketing mismanagement, and demonstration of the union pitfall.
Rhetorical question for Mr GM Driver... Please explain how President Bush had his hand in the demise of the domestic auto industry?
Absolutely! Otherwise the union along with its complacent and entitled work force has and will continue to have a stranglehold on these three.
This would force the three to really evaluate their portfolio, properly segment the market, and reduce the overlap and redundancy...

Great story, though can you please elaborate on "Detroit does have a viable future..". Presumably you are referring to the auto industry. If that is the case, then I would have to disagree... My persepctive is that it will take many, many generations to 'flush' out the attitudes of superioirity and entitlement that may have been applicable many years ago. My frame of reference is validated with the facts that I recently had the opportunity to spend a couple of years with the mighty GM and grew up with several generations of automotive professionals.
