"Then again, scientists are in near universal agreement that something must be done.."
A statement like that brings into doubt the rest of the article. www.petitionproject.or.../ has a list of over 31,000 scientists of which more than 9,000 have PhD's who doubt the "earth is warming, it is primarily caused by man-made emissions, AND it will lead to catastrophe" scenario that left is using to destroy capitalism and seize more and more power over people's lives. Note that most of the people and groups pushing this agenda were formerly or currently are members of the Socialist/Communist type parties. Since those have been proven failures, they have jumped on this issue. Follow the money and follow the power.
Global warming, errr make that "Climate Change" (since the earth has been cooling for the last decade) has poorly substantiated theories that people will suffer harm some time in the future. Meanwhile access to inexpensive energy (coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear power) GREATLY improves the living conditions and saves lives NOW. By making energy more expensive you are guaranteeing widespread human suffering, especially in the 3rd world. How's that for compassion and caring?
Eagle-Chief, The graph is NOT a TOTAL daily cost of commodities per person. It is how much the total cost has CHANGED since the begining of the year (note how it is $0 there and then goes negative for a short while). So this year it cost each person an EXTRA $4.77 at its peak in July. We are now almost back to where we were at the begining of the year.
I would like to this graph since say 2000 and see how it looks. A ball park figure of what the total daily cost per person, or the change caluculated as a percent increase would be nice too.
Don't invest in GE. They are the major American company investing in Iran now. Iran is killing American soldiers. It's not ALL about the money. Have a concience and boycott GE.

Ms. Rogers said: "Three actions are essential: (1) reduce tax entitlements growth through some form of means testing "
In other words, don't count on all of the money that you have input to Social Security, medicare, and other programs all of your life for your retirement. She and Obama want to take all of that and give it to the "working man" (because we all know that you don't work ;-) ). You should be punished for doing well and working hard, not rewarded.

Since a good chunk of the price of a gallon of gas is fixed due to federal, state, and local taxes, it is natural that the percentage change at the pump will be lower (imagine if taxes were $10/gallon, whether oil were $200/barrel and thus gas were ~$15/gallon or if oil/gas were free buit still had the $10 in taxes, the percentage change would only 33% [1-10/15] despite the massive/infinite change in oil price). Remove the taxes from your charts above and let's see what that shows.
