Why Advertising Is Failing on the Internet [View article]
...I disagree...advertising has the potential to blossom far beyond what it ever was in print or broadcast media for several reasons...first, it can be targeted much more readily using the enormous amount of information gleaned from each individual's interaction with the web...second, the amount of information that can be delivered in just an instant to a potential customer is much greater -- consequently, the advertiser is positioned to deliver more reasons to try a product...third, by virtue of the first two reasons, internet advertising is much more efficient and, hence, more is achieved with each dollar spent on it...finally, and perhaps most importantly, the internet is now EVERYWHERE -- home pc's, lapbooks, netbooks, cellphones, kiosks -- why, my daughters have it on their Nintendo DS's...no other media has ever achieved such potential market penetration...so, no, if anything, internet advertising is set to explode...on the other hand -- "People will pay for superior, timely, original content and for superior online experiences."....uhhh -- nope!...nobody -- or at least no one with any sense -- will be willing to pay for internet content...practically any information I want I can find somewhere for free on the web..."The Economist"?...hey, I can send you to a website that'll let you download something called a "torrent" that you can use in a program such as bitorrent to get a copy of the latest edition...and you know what you'll find on that website?...a bunch of ads.
