The discrepancy between rising oil prices and oil stock prices rising to a lesser extent might be due to the increasing cost of crude oil production. The oil companies have to drill deeper, further off-shore, or process tar-sands at higher cost. Increasing investment costs for alternative energy sources by these same oil companies may also explain why oil stocks have risen comparatively less.
