  • What Is McDonald's Thinking? [View article]
You didn't almost fall out of your chair. You did, hit your head, you can't remember it but it seriously impacted the rational part of your brain. In the last three years they have returned 25% of their EV to their shareholders via dividends and buybacks. What are they thinking indeed!? Enriching their shareholders! Dastardly them! A tangible book value of around $1? They own all the real estate under their franchises, carried at cost, not market value. Prime business RE worth much more than book value states. A stable recurring business, little debt, a great world brand, useing cash flow to give back to shareholders plus expanding quickly in China, South America, and other high growth areas...this is a great growth and value company.

  • The Economic Cost of the Military Industrial Complex [View article]
Absolutely it is a huge cost. What would be the cost to ours and the world economy if Russia was the strongest military power? Forget about frredom and human rights, think dollars. Or a Russia and Iran combo? If Iran could actually shut down the Hormuz strait? I submit the risk premium would be huge in dollars, and the uncertainty would subtract large amounts from the world GP (is there such a thing as a world GDP?) and the people who would suffer the most are at the margins, here and across the world. I would like to see an analysis of what we spend on military versus a scenario of if there was no US military. My theory is that we get a positive "return" on our military budget. Any Econ students out there who need a Masters or PhD thesis?

  • Value Investing in Sears: Avoid Current Perceptions & Look Forward [View article]
Here in Anchorage, I drive past Sears every day on the main Highway. Very few cars are ever in their parking lot. When there is it is because they rent the parking lot out for "Used Car Sales Extravaganza", or to fairground rides like ferris wheels. North in Wasilla it is even worse. I doubt I have ever seen more than 12 cars in the parking lot at once, and that would include the employee vehicles. Across the Parks Highway is a WalMart, and its parking lot is nearly full. Not much return on what the retail locations are worth. I never understood how combining two losers, K mart and Sears, would make a winner. As for your analogy, it is not rational read.
