The authors thoughts are good regarding the recent sell off, and with that said, you have to back drop gold with the fundamentals for all of the major fiat currencies. Our current government policies of borrowing money to pay interest on the debt will eventually trash the dollar and can only lead us to a third world status.

Bernanke and Geitner are giving us no hope for any major changes in our monetary policy for immediate future. Couple the above with the fact that five major governments are actively buying Gold and are perhaps heading back toward some sort of limited "gold standard." With that in mind, it's really hard to see too much of a downside to owning gold. I will continue to buy as Gold dips lower.]]>

Trying to Understand Airline Executive Compensation http://seekingalpha.com/article/174816-trying-to-understand-airline-executive-compensation?source=feed#comment-787657 787657
First of all, the industry is still in a decline that started 10/24/78 when the industry was deregulated. Before deregulation, the industry was under written by government subsidies, meaning that the airlines generally made some money or broke even.

Since deregulation, airlines finances have been in a slow decent and bankruptcies have been abundant. That said, the airlines are still trying to adjust shed encumbrances and have been in place since before President Carter signed the Airline deregulation act. Add to that the growth of airline seat miles by start up carriers, high fuel cost and unreasonable union salarys and you have a recipe for disaster.

When assessing CEO performance, you can't do it in a vacuum as Captain Herbst seems to want to do. I would ask how much more money these airlines might have lost had these executives not been in place.

In conclusion, I don't think a large international airline will never ever make constant profits as they don't really have control of cost and revenues. That said, how can a CEO be blamed for loosing so much money with so many variables outside their control? ]]>

Ford's long term prospects when competing with a competitor with unlimited cash can only end in disaster. Ford's only hope is that the car buying public is so offended by a Government owned car company that boycott their products and suffocate the company.

Who knows what gestapo tactics the Chicago mafia will take at that point? Have a nice day.]]>

Maybe in the next 60 years or so, smart grids will make some sense. In the mean time, let's go Nuclear and keep our power sources local. We won't need no stinking grid!]]>

Jim apparently sees no conflict of interest with speaker Pelosi holding up all voting on drilling projects while at the same time investing her money in competing products.

Pelosi should be impeached!]]>

Regarding the revised rules for qualifying as being un-employeed, yeah Clinton did it in the 90's but it started with Jimmy Carter in the 1970s.

As for contract vs full time employment, I think you'll see more of that as baby boomers retire and seek to suppliment their retirement income. fwiw, I am planning the same part-time gig myself as I am being forced to work just to pay my $30K/ yr. tax bills.]]>

Depending on one's point of view, you could take that "optimistic" statement two ways. I what exactly is meant by that?]]>

Hence, people are paying more for fuel and food causing them to have less money left over to pay credit card bills and also buy real estate. The economy is all connected if you will but follow the threads.

FWIW, I see a correction in the real estate market as painful, but a good thing in the long run. The prices had just gotten way beyond what was reasonable in some markets.]]>
