I could not have said it better, total agreement.
The CAT is been in my model portfolio for over a year. I have seen the highs and lows. Believe the best has yet to come. Believe the recent China real estate scare a non event as the millions of citizens have had a better lift of life quality and will pay whatever it takes to get what they want. The government will not suppress their people for fear of overthrow. CAT is there and will fill the Yellow Brick Road with CATS. Dividend is cheap, though.

  • Shipping stocks (SEA) take a speculative run higher as data from China, Japan, and the U.S. provides some optimism over the global economy. The topsy-turvy trading in the sector isn't for the feint of heart, as the glut of oversupply in dry-bulk shipping keeps analysts extending out their call for a recovery which will take hold. Advancers: EGLE +13.3%, PRGN +18.4%, GNK +10.9%, SB +4.4%[View news story]

EGLE, PRGN, GNK all lose money except SB Safe Bulkers which pays a dividend out of earnings not borrowings. SB is top of the Leader Board and only Dry Bulker worth owning.

Agree with all of the bulls on RAI, disagree with the author. Have RAI in model portfolio for two months, MO two years. Believe both are "necessity stocks", must have products as they are additive, "sin" stocks if you will, not religious, but health wise. I wanted to add LO in the pot but the menthol ban scare stopped me. Dividends a generous bonus,

  • Does the surge in gold mining stocks mean the bottom is in? Gold futures finish flat after a two-day climb, but the big story in recent sessions hasn't been the physical gold as much as the miners. The mining ETF (GDX +3.9%) is surging nearly 4% today, but that's after a ~20% YTD selloff. Today, miners are broadly higher: RGLD +4.5%, AEM +4.3%, ABX +3.9%, KGC +3.8%, GG +4.1%, NEM +3.3%[View news story]

Newmont Mining has seen its low of the year as the 4.4% dividend should hold it up from further damage. With close to 100 million ounces of gold reserves, billions of pounds of copper, price of NEM is a third of irs real asset value. Predict management will try to run stock up to avoid a vulture flying in to take it away. Even a soverign could buy it for a built in gold supply. Dividend highest in sector.

  • Tobacco stocks struggle after the U.K. is reported to be looking at adopting packaging laws similar to the measures Australia instituted last year. In London, Imperial Tobacco (ITYBY.PK) and British American Tobacco (BTI -1.5%) started the day off weak, while stateside Reynolds American (RAI -2.1%), Lorillard (LO -0.8%) and Altria (MO -0.1%) are underperforming. [View news story]

The management is very smart and have the touch to acquire top quality used vessels in excellent shape for bargain prices as their peers are financially strapped for cash. Saves $$$$ versus new vessels as these second hand ships are like new when restored.

The sinking spells of the other coal concerns has rubbed off on BTU. The canaries stopped singing, the lamps blew out as the complacent management neglects the stuckholders. BTU had three recommendations yesterday and the stock dropped $0.12 a share, a no vote of confidence. Hopefully a Wilbur Ross type investor will seize BTU selling at a third of real asset value. Location of Australian mines just "down the water pike" from China, India, Japan. As NG rises in price coal becomes more attractive. Over $4.00 will light the candles and the canaries will sing again.

  • Newmont Mining: Today's Winning Long-Term Play [View article]

Newmont Mining is a core holding in my model portfolio, and since new management (CEO) took over March 1st, and prior as COO, the stock has tanked. Coincidence for sure but still a fact.
Selling at a sizable discount to asset value, 99 million ounces of gold, billion pounds of copper reserves my take is that NEM could be acquired by a foreign entity. Management cannot afford to let the stock stay down. Dividend is a generous bonus, highest in sector.

BTU has been in my model portfolio since 2011, and I have watched it deteriorate since. Part of its decline I suspect is due to the other less financed coal companies, some on the verge of bankruptcy. I have been critical of its complacent management who take the stuckholders for granted. With a martket cap of under $6B it is a perfect target for a vulture takeover player who respects a natural resource company selling for a third of real assets.
This article nails the total BTU picture in an most excellent manner, underscoring its true value.
