The Future Shape of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) [View article]
Thanks for the excellent article. In Arizona Abengoa Solar from Spain is currently building a 280-megawatt solar thermal power plant, Solano, about 70 miles southwest of Phoenix. Solano will use parabolic mirrors to heat a 60/40 alloy of molten Sodium and Potassium Nitrate salts. A NREL grant is funding enough storage to reach a 70% capacity factor. The plant should begin operation in 2011. Abengoa will sell its power to Arizona Public Service.
China's Solar Stock Rally: Avoid Being Burned [View article]
Good article. You didn't even mention the state of the world economy. Solar is not going to come out of this right away because the world economy is not going to. Solar is linked at the hip to financials because of the need for long term financing. Notice also, that SPWR has not participated in this run up. Until they get much more support from China the Chinese solar stocks are overpriced.
$200 Oil Is Coming While We Waste a Perfectly Good Crisis (Part 3) [View article]
Awful lot of replies. There must be something important here or there wouldn't have been such a reaction. I didn't like all of the article (I like green energy) but the proof that there is something to it is that we have already spiked once. My guess is that it will be worse next time.
Segway's Personal Electronic Vehicle: Nothing Says Success Like Teaming Up with GM [View article]
The market for this product starts in Asian cities. Eventually, variations on this are likely over much of the world. Small towns in Europe without much traffic and where bicycles are common would provide a good market.
Advanced Nonsense: The Politics of Alternative Energy [View article]
If it can't be said in 4-5 concise paragraphs it is generally not worth reading. Further, if the final paragraph does not restate the major theme don't waste your time with authors that don't write effectively. There are plenty that do.
Saudis Try to Re-Invent the Internal Combustion Engine [View article]
It is fun to speculate but that is all this is. Even if this came true it still wouldn't change the peak oil profile by more than a few years. Transportation energy will change over the next few decades.
Renewable Energy Is at the Center of the Presidential Debate [View article]
A square 100 miles on a side in the Arizona desert filled with solar thermal would supply all of the energy this nation currently uses and at today's prices. Solar thermal is also a baseload power because it can be stored as a salt brine in 'insulated vaults' for days. This, PV on roof tops, and wind can and will supply most of the power to the West within a few decades. It will be phased in as old coal and gas plants are retired. If a new transmission grid is built the Southwest can supply the entire nation. Arizona power has begun construction on a 250 meg solar thermal plant south of Phoenix. California has a number that will soon break dirt.
Goldman Turns Cautious on Solar Sector [View article]
Goldman manipulates the market regularly. They talk about weakening demand but the government just passed a bill that will pay 30% of every solar job for the next 8 years. They didn't mention this? How could they miss this? The U.S. has become the 800lb gorilla in world solar demand. Goldman should never be trusted.
