Amazon: Sacrificing Margin for Sales [view article]
Good Analysis -- although I doubt the dollar's rally will continue in light of the trillion dollar taxpayer bailout. Sep 23 08:48 AMKnow How Many Kindles Amazon Has Sold? 240,000 [view article]
Good Article, although I don't believe Amazon will see this kind of parabolic growth. Sure, early adopters will pay $300+ for the gadget and $10 per book -- but the masses will not. Amazon is going to have to ultimately give away the hardware and charge for the E-books, or vice versa, before joe six-pack becomes interested.Somewhere down the road, you need to cut your estimate in half. Amazon Amazes! [view article]
The lovefest with Amazon continues! This author, and others like her, help Amazon sugarcoat its performance. Who ever heard of including a non-cash, one-time capital gain in operating income?"Another reason for Amazon’s higher-than-expected earnings could be a non-cash gain of $53 million from the sale of the company’s European DVD rental assets." -- No kidding! So much for financial clarity, and transparency! These clowns are evasive, elusive and border on sleazy. I don't trust them. Jul 24 09:08 PMWho Says Amazon's Margins Are Rising? [view article]
NetMargin1.5> They always beat on revenues -- seldom on operating income.
> Hence the expectation of lower margins.

> Okay, give 'em a premium for the revenue growth, but not a high-tech multiple on top of that! Google has similar revenue growth and has 30% operating margins -- its multiple is 33 (ttm). Amazon is a low-margin retailer with multiple of 58 (ttm).

Greg - I agree. I am short amazon and believe the momentum has ended. There was much talk in '07 about amazon's improving margins. I just don't see it happening. Sure they did better than '06, but margins are shrinking over time -- see the attached chart.bp2.blogger.com/_Q5i63...
Bulls think third party margins will help! Meanwhile, Amazon adds music downloads, an electronics store and groceries. These low-margin goods, along with growing competition, will keep a lid on margins. If/when the revenue growth slows, this stock will be cut in half. Jan 06 04:53 PM
Amazon Looks Ready to Make a Run [view article]
So, you fell for their annual "news" release... It really wasn't news worthy at all. And for someone who is educated to base their bullish opinion on surprises to me.jeffmatthewsisnotmakin...
Your conclusion is faulty. Amazon didn't say that holiday sales were going well -- they said they were better than last year. I ask you -- do you think 10% YoY growth would be good for Amazon? Dec 27 11:37 AM
Amazon On Course For Success [view article]
Another analyst buys into the amazon hype. He believes more in amazon than amazon management does!Check on the progress of Amazon's Stock Repurchase Program. A year ago, in August 2006, the Board of Directors authorized a 24-month program to repurchase up to an aggregate of $500 million of Amazon common stock from which they repurchased 8.2 million shares for $252 million in 2006 and 6.3 million shares for $248 million in Q1 2007.
These trades were quite profitable for Amazon, yielding a gain of over $725 million at today's share price of $84.52. Not bad, considering the firm won't make this much in eighteen months of online retailing. So what about the subsequent plan announced earlier this year?
In April 2007, the Board of Directors authorized a new 24-month program to repurchase up to an aggregate of $500 million of common stock. In Q2'07, not one share was purchased! The average share price during the quarter jumped above $50 and Amazon's management knew better than to squander its windfall on the overpriced shares. Investors would be prudent to follow suit and wait for the price to return to a reasonable value -- below $50.
