  • Wholly Digital - Seattle PI Tests New News Business Model [View article]
Good luck to the P-I staffers that have been moved on. The advantage over time will have to go to the Seattle Times site, as that paper will be able to use their own pages to promote their website. The P-I site will have trouble over time keeping up with a much larger editorial staff from the Times.
It will be interesting to watch.

  • All Eyes on Seattle as News Industry Searches for Answers [View article]
Well done story on the future of online newspapering. I think the Times will be in the same position one day soon, as that paper is losing millions of $$$ per year, and no family, no matter how wealthy, wants to see their entire nest egg wither away.

  • Online-Only PI Shows How Newsrooms Would Empty Out [View article]
The reason people read the PI, or most papers, is because of habit, and the output of the 170 journos that gather news and info. Cutting delivery of the paper reduces the habit, cutting the staff to 22 reduces the amount of news and the relationship that many readers have developed with some of their favorites writers. This online only model will not work, won't support the 22 editorial positions and others, and will disappear in 2 years. Too bad, but once again, a big media company is moving in entirely the wrong direction.

  • Ads and News: Google Capitalizes on Old Idea [View article]
Google looks as though they have all the pieces in place for total worldwide domination in the advertising business. I predict that Google will end up owning McClatchy, Gannett and Tribune within the next two years. They need the newsgathering power of the reporters on the ground, and hiring these folks would be a lot easier if they bought out the entire operations.

  • 9 Questions on Newspapers' 2Q Reports [View article]
It is sad what has happened to newspapers around the country. Every day the stock price of all the publicly owned companies goes deeper into the tank. The real estate mess and job boards have siphoned huge cash flow for newspapers, and that business is not coming back.

Will Google own the world, and all that is reported in 10 years?

  • Newspapers 'Rightsizing'? More Like Frightsizing [View article]
The revenue most unlikely to be replaced on the web is the preprint revenue that is lost from people reading online. The 28 page Home Depot insert, and revenue from that goes away as people cancel and go to online. There are no positions on any website that can capture as much money as the preprint revenue from the Sunday papers.
