On the Constitutionality of a Newspaper Bailout [View article]
Good article, jeff. Not much chance the government is going to be dumping any money into newspapers any time soon. These guys are on their own and NEED to stay totally independent of the government bailout.
Ariel Investments recently increased their investment in Gannet so now they own more than 12% of the outstanding common. President Obama's best friend runs Ariel. Obama had his pre-inaugural office in Ariel owned office space. The Ariel-Obama-Gannett newspaper tie in is interesting. Some reporter should find out why Ariel doubled down on Gannett. Do they know something?
A Brutal Q1 for Magazines, Newspapers [View article]
Jeff: What papers do you predict will report being down 30% in ad revenues in the first quarter ? I haven't seen that number anywhere, you often throw around numbers with no basis in fact. There will be NO MAJOR PAPERS reporting revenue losses of 30% for the first quarter. Pure poppycock and speculation on your part.
Jarvis vs. Mutter: What Newspapers Are Worth [View article]
Tremendous discussion and many worthwhile points from the author and the commentors. I think newspapers still have a chance to survive, but maybe won't be appreciated until the dailies are gone. The weeklies will increase their publication cycles to fill the void, and more specialized papers with heavy content ( like local news, or sports, or local business) may be produced.
There will be a LOT of printing presses sitting idly by, waiting for a rebirth.
I do not think I have ever read a story so poorly written, so nonsensical, in my entire life. I do not know who Jeff Jarvis is, but I can't see him writing for the local grade school paper.
Too Many People Don't Care If Newspapers Die [View article]
I predict Google will start buying newspapers in mass. Why? Google needs the news to feed its search engine with credible information. Google will be able to hire thousands of people at one time without having to pay hiring costs. They'll pay with stock, and the bankers that technically own these papers now will be happy to get Google stock instead of hoping for a miraculous turnaround. Google will also be able to combine their online expertise with paper's own expertise, true synergistic opportunities exist here. I also see Microsoft getting into this battle to avoid losing ground, for if Google owned a lot of papers, and therefore stories, they'd somehow figure out a way to keep those stories off the Live search engines of Mr. Softie.
The Wall Strret Journal seems to be doing something right. More national and international news, and some very good sports stories. I think this paper is becoming the first and only read in many homes and offices across America. This paper appears to be giving readers what they want.
The biggest newspaper companies all took on massive debt at the worst possible time. There isn't enough cash flow to cover the interest payments on the debt to continue to put out quality products. The entire newspaper industry is in that same boat. Too bad, it was a fantastic business to be in for more than a century.
