  • UniPixel tumbles post-earnings [View news story]
Expected 1 PO, received 1 large and 2 small. Obviously a downgrade is logical. Wtf were they basing their PT on previously when all guidance only pointed to 1 and possibly 2 PO this year from their preferred-pricing partners?

  • UniPixel jumps after disclosing touch sensor order [View news story]
They have regularly sent demo/prototypes for testing to their partners without releasing any PR. They either received a waiver for QA certification, or they received the certification. It could be either, as they were expecting their roll-to-roll testing equipment which was needed to finalize certification in mid-oct, or they could have received the waiver and will be doing manual testing.

I'm sure we will find out more this afternoon.

  • Gevo's Run Of Bad Luck Continues [View article]
So your conclusion is that biodiesel will fill the entire market next year for EPA mandated advanced biofuel blending requirements due to it's RIN value?

What about the economics of the fuels themselves? How much does a gallon of biodiesel cost vs a gallon of isobutonol? Does it offset the difference in RIN prices?

  • Nokia 1020 Channel Checks [View article]
While of course I wish the 1020 would have been a blockbuster success, I'm not worried about low sales. As a niche device, it won't follow the traditional life cycle of smartphones, and will likely sell very steadily for well over a year such as the 808, rather than peaking at release and tapering off. Further, especially while starting at such a high price point while on contract, it won't need to be written off for a loss if they produce too much inventory. People will buy this phone for years to come if the price is right.

  • Nokia Gets Ready To Board The Windows RT Pain Train [View article]
I agree. I think an RT tablet could sell successfully if the price is right. I just think the Intel x86 processors are quickly making the mobile price/performance gap increasingly small and soon non-existent. Why buy a $250 RT tablet when you can buy a $250 Win8 tablet?

  • Nokia Gets Ready To Board The Windows RT Pain Train [View article]
Windows Phone API is different. It wouldn't be a seamless port for a WP app to run on RT. This is why I think Nokia should focus on phablets instead. Ecosystem synergy with their main products. It could pretty much do everything the RT can anyway, and more given phone capabilities.

I hope MSFT is subsidizing this like they did WP.

  • Nokia Set To Make Investors Very Happy [View article]
Here Drive has been very reliable to me over the last year. The only problem is that it sometimes navigates to stores that have gone out of business or moved.

  • Recent Adduplex Data Suggest Nokia Sold Over 2 Million Lumia 520s In July [View article]
Obviously hard to translate into sales, but google trends shows searches for the 520/521 are at all time highs. Every other phone shows a spike in searches after the announcement, a peak following the launch, and then a constant decline. The 520 is definitely a momentum builder, and that's rare in the smartphone world.

I think if Nokia sold 2m 520s in July, that number will only continue to increase in August and September.

  • Nokia Seems To Be Getting It Right [View article]
I also agree that quad-core support is unnecessary at the moment for WP8. Maybe once batteries improve and a larger market expects to be able to play higher-end 3d rendered games on their phones without draining their battery in 20 minutes, but that could be pretty far off.

I'd also argue that 1080p is unnecessary for any devices under 22". I'd rather have a battery that lasts longer. However, knowledge of resolution, even if out of ignorance, is a lot more widespread in consumers than number of processor cores, so it might be worth it just for a marketing perspective.

What is absolutely needed is support for larger screens of 5-6", and stylus support. The stylus aspect is important. It's what makes the Note II as good as it is.

  • Commoditization Of Smartphones: Good Or Bad For Nokia? [View article]
Basically, the Lumia 520 (not including the 521) downloaded 15% of apps running AdDuplex's ad services (which is a large enough sample size). So it's from all phones sold historically that are still in use.

Jacob didn't estimate number of phones no longer in use, but it probably wouldn't be too significant given it's only been just over a year and most people keep their phones for around 2 years.

Nokia didn't always have 85% marketshare either, that's just the latest and the peak, but by using the highest marketshare for Nokia, it means by his estimate of 19m Lumia's sold, there would actually be more windows phones in the market than 22.3, and therefore more Lumia 520s sold than he calculated.

The real question is how accurate of a representation of marketshare is % of app downloads.
