Wasn't it Boston Market? And I think a few of them are still around. I agree - terrible concept.
Didn't an episode of Seinfeld feature this franchise? That was the kiss of death - every company ever featured on Seinfeld either failed or almost failed - J Peterman, Levi's, Snapple, the paint your own pottery concept....
Too bad the show is off the air - they're could have been a tradeable thesis there.

This sector is indeed doing well. Take advantage while you can. Over the long haul, I try to sort out the good from the bad based on my fundamental view of the next 2-3 years. This type of discretionary spending will likely continue to shrink and people will likely spend their money where they can get the most bang for their buck, or the best value. Ruby Tuesday Buffalo Wild Wings for example seem to be a good value. Not the best food, but it's priced well, and you know what to expect. IMO PF Chang's is a good experience at a reasonable ticket price. Cheesecake Factory seems overpriced for the experience. Yeah, I get nine thousand calories in my meal, but it's a hefty check at the end of the meal.

For me the jury is still out on these "fast-casual" concepts. Panera seems like a home run, but many do not execute well and I'm not impressed with the group as a whole (I'm speaking here purely from a customer's viewpoint and not as an investor).
