  • Why Do Chinese Save? [View article]

What are the savings rate for Chinese in the US? Canada? Australia? Hong Kong? England?

I believe the further away you get from the mainland and the more stable the political and economic system, you will find a lower savings rate.

  • The Next 100 Years: A Forecast for the 21st Century by George Friedman [View article]
Friedmen's article is several months old. What took you so long in taking a cheap shot?

You did a big disservice to your readers by not including the, quite reasonable, foreword to Friedmen's essay. It answered many of the comments that these uninformed readers have made.

By neglecting to include Friedmen's introductory remarks, you created a massive distortion of his views.

Since you did not include a link to the original article, your readers, from the comments posted, are even more misinformed and confused.

Your so-called intellectual honesty is bogus.

  • Whose Fault Is the Global Crisis? [View article]
    Sir:

Please don't be intimidated by the criticisms and attacks coming from the left.

When you live and work in China, you learn very quickly that Chinese only like to hear compliments and praise. They do not like to hear unpleasant truths.

China made some serious mistakes in its development strategy. Now they will pay the price. China does not want to hear about these mistakes. Please stop telling them.

Mr. Pettis, you are obviously a friend of China, however, this will not protect you from attacks when you point out the mistakes and consequences of China's economic errors.

My suggestion, tell the Chinese nice words about how they are going to be a "super power" and have the world's most advanced economy in 2050.

Tell them that this economic crisis was caused by the US and was engineered in order to destroy China's economy.

Advise them to continue their current policies and to build more infrastructure, increase exports, and decrease imports.

And when the Chinese economy crashes, be the first to blame it on the US.

Only then will you really be considered a wise "friend of China."

  • Japan, Turkey, Poland, Mexico the Rising World Powers? [View article]
One of the drawbacks of a democracy is that every idiot, buffoon, simpleton has a right to free speech and a vote (scary).

If some of the people had read Mr. Friedman's entire article, they would have had a different perspective.

  • China: Will Rising Unemployment Cause Policy Missteps? [View article]
I agree with you when you say that China must increase demand.

One of the ways I thought this could be done is by encouraging the custom of giving gifts, especially toys, at Christmas.

I know all the arguments about the religious aspect of Christmas in "communist" China but that does not seem to bother the Japanese.

Chinese families are very child centered. If China could establish the custom of giving toys to children at Christmas, this would certainly save its toy industry.

Pizza Hut, McDonald's, KFC are all foreign imports and, by the number of Chinese children eating at these places, they are very popular and have become part of the Chinese lifestyle.

Stimulating demand is not easy but saving the Chinese toy industry should be something the Chinese leaders should consider. Santa could help.
