8013031, it seems you enjoy confirmation quotations, may I offer one of my favorite by Albert Einstein: "if the facts don't fit the theory, change the facts." Using 40% of the US corn crop for ethanol simply doesn't make sense today. That corn could go a long way in feeding our domestic animal stock. Corn is a major cost in producing and bringing to market these critters. Enjoy your rhetoric...however.
Bret, your comments on ethanol are so true and seldom spoken. I understand that the pro ethanol boys want to bump up the 10% to 15% gas mix. Isn't there a better use for all that dent corn? With the US on the cusp of pumping all this "new" oil from shale maybe...naw, the farmers are going to circle their wagons and the Washington boys are going to fold. Just a thought. Forget it.
BP asks a federal judge to temporarily halt its ~$8.5B settlement with plaintiffs over the 2010 Gulf of Mexico spill, saying the claims administrator's decisions could give the claimants "windfalls" and that the company could be "irreparably harmed." A judge ruled March 5 that BP must keep paying some compensation in larger amounts and to more parties than the company had anticipated. [View news story]
Still amazing some of the doltish comments put forth here on SA.

Great article...makes you ponder. Of course, most of us will not change their investing habits after reading this. When it comes to a volatile stock market, the amygdala rules the roost. In my forty years of playing the game, oil & copper has made me the most money. However, no personal delusions, I've been really lucky. In fact, I'll take good luck every time over my so called " skill set ".
I too was disappointed that Citi did not raise its dividend, since I'm a primary dividend investor. I do understand the reasons behind this decision however. I've never been a big fan of so called stock buy backs - never really seen a significant benefit to the small shareholder. Dividends are real, tangible and seeable in the pocket. For now, I'm satisfied with my sizable capital gains.

Albert, I'm constantly searching, filtering what I call 2nd & 3rd tier MLP's. Many of these are fairly new, little or no track record, have experience operational Issues...read - their prices have taken a significant tumble. Many well known MLP's are fairly valued or simply more then I want to pay. If you have the patience, give them time to get their act together, one can make some serious income with the B teams. By the way, my MMP has returned 165% in cap.gains. Haven't figure in dividends. I'm lucky.Enjoyed your article...thanks for taking time to pen. Long: QRE, EROC, ++++++

I'm looking beyond the trees (this is a young MLP) to the forest. Management is working to build this partnership into cash cow. Problems...sure - what's new? I'm staying with these folks and continue to evaluate their results every quarter. I see nothing today to change that view. Today's price would make a solid entry point. Buy up to $20. Long: QRE, MMP, ETP, ETE,VNR,TLLP, MWE, EROC,+++

"The current Brazilian government of Dilma Rousseff has shown a disregard for the equitable rights of investors in private companies"
This is not the kind of company you walk away from...you run like hell. Any left\right wing government that doesn't respect individual property rights does not get one penny of my money.
"Second, Buffett also waged a spirited defense of Berkshire's policy of not paying dividends. In fact, critics have long pointed out the irony here. After all, Buffett loves to buy dividend-paying stocks."
This irony isn't loss on me...the investor would have to sell his holdings to enjoy the profits. I have significant dividends coming in each month and I sure enjoy spending some of that money, picking new stocks, etc. If your a Buffet fan, skip Berkshire, buy select companies that he holds and spend/invest the dividends yourself.

Interesting article. I would take a very long look at committing funds to Argentina however. The folks down there are known to nationalize (confiscate) your assets or simply make you an offer you want to...but can't refuse.
